Overview: Man vs Rock is an Indie comic with some tongue in cheek humor combined with a little Attack of the Killer Tomatoes meets weird science.

Review: I have to say that Man vs Rock definitely has its moments. The tongue in cheek humor and political connections drew me in early on. While there is this fun comical attitude poking fun at political issues expressed through out the issue the comedy of it all is intriguing. There is a great build up of suspense from page to page but in the end, something is missing. Not sure but I believe it’s because I was waiting for this huge battle with Buck.  Before I get too critical, I will say it may feel and read like its all over the place on the surface but in the end, there is a level of legitimacy you don’t find in a lot of comics. It’s cleverly written, and pretty damn good overall. I felt like I was reading a skewed version of Sharknado with a little of Lake Placid with a whole lot Shaun of the Dead quirkiness thrown in for good measure.

Art (7/10): The art for this comic will likely get some flack but I don’t think it is essential to the overall quality of the comic. The pacing of the art and storytelling really work well overall. The larger panels definitely had an impact on me as I read through the issue. An Indie comic should exceed the spectrum overall and be fun, exploratory and fearless, the art and storytelling do a great job overall at sticking to those core ingredients.

Lettering / Layout (8/10): Lettering is crisp and does the job. Probably one of the biggest and brightest spots of this comic.

Story (7/10): So the titular “Man vs Rock” and paranoid Buck Stone give us a politically incorrect story with all kinds of tongue in cheek humor and hilarious interactions. It’s vulgar, exploratory and fearless, yet has a certain level of brilliance that had me wanting to read more and more. The pages dedicated to the “rock shadows” and the fear they instill were really clever and creatively done in terms of storytelling. I found myself laughing just because of its over the top and absurd angle but the dialogue and pace overall had me sucked in. As I mentioned earlier, I found myself asking, “where’s the next issue”. Overall its definitely not for kids but its great for that comic reader that loves to watch Adult Swim all while drinking 10 Red bulls. The main capturing point of Man vs Rock comes from the way in which it takes all of societies individual irrational and paranoid fears of everything and twists them into this world.

Overall (8/10): Overall… yeah. I’m a fan. Original, incredibly intelligent and very and I mean VERY entertaining! I give it a 8 out of 10 just because it may not be for the masses but is pretty damn brilliant. Readers will either get this story and really love the vulgar creative humor or they’ll miss the entire point, it’s the typical love it or hate it scenario. Rockpocalypse…….ha!\
