Make Your Move Dances to a Familiar Beat

GameStop, Inc.

In the tradition of Save the Last Dance and Step Up, Duane Adler’s new project Make Your Move, brings  dance films to the next generation. Responsible for two of the top grossing dance films of all time, Adler once again uses the medium of love and dance to break through cultural and language barriers in this new film.

Donny (Derek Hough) is currently stuck dancing for change on the streets of New Orleans after serving time for street cons. Petty and sad, he is tired of the games and decided to leave New Orleans for New York. In New York, his friend Nick (Wesley Jonathan) is the owner of one of the most popular underground dance clubs, Static. Nick and his friend Kaz (Will Yun Lee) work the club together, but not for long.  Things aren’t all dayglow and blacklights in the underground club circuit. Kaz breaks away from Static and opens rival club, Oto. Oto is founded by a sleezy Wall Street Businessman (Jefferson Brown) who is interested in one thing; Static’s beautiful dancer Aya (BoA).

Michael promises Aya help to acquire a USA visa in exchange for here signing a contract to perform exclusively at Oto. However, Aya is having none of it. Needing a place to perform, Aya returns to Static and secretly takes the stage. Donny watches her intently, taken in by the spell of her performance. Transcending the barriers of language and culture, Donny and Aya dance as if they’ve always known each other. The problem is, the two may be in love, but they still have to deal with the issues of two rival clubs and their friends.

The idea of dance and love transcending the boundaries of language and family ties is nothing new. In fact, the creator of the film is well known for two of his other films with the same themes. Duane has perfected the concept of the dance Romeo and Juliet story, and frankly I was hoping he would change it up a little bit more. The difference here lies in the fact that this film focuses not just on breaking the barriers from across the tracks, but barriers across nations. Choreography by Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo (So You Think You Can Dance, America’s Best Dance Crew) is accompanied by K-Pop, Taiko drumming, Dubstep; the film is not only multi-ethnic with it’s cast, but also in it’s music choices. The dances are challenging and the background work beautiful to behold. BoA’s multilingual skills have allowed her to transcend her South Korean roots to sell millions of albums in Japan and now appear in her first English-language film with Make Your Move.

The cast and dances are new, the music style fresh. Make Your Move has a new style, but still dances to a familiar beat.

Make Your Move dances into theaters April 18.
