Mackie has been one of the leaders in producing some of the best sound songs and podcasts. Now Mackie has expanded their line with three knew models of the Big Knob. Our review will consist of the Big Knob Studio Monitor Controller Interface.
The name Big Knob comes from well, the big knob volume control in the center of this tiny unit that it about 6″ x 12″ in size that produces some big sounds. The design is well-balanced and doesn’t slide easily across the desk when accidentally (or intentionally) bumped.
This particular unit allows you to choose between three sources and two monitor pairings, has a mono, mute and dim functions as well as two Onyx mic preamps, which allow the user to control the gains and 48Vphantom power switch for condenser michrophones. This high-resolution 96kHz/24-bit recorder allows for play back and cues mixes allowing you the flexibility to mix podcasts.
One of my favorite features is the Traction recording software that is compatible with both Mac and PC. I like how easy it is to use and virtually idiot proof. All the monitor and 2-track inputs are clearly marked on the back of the device.
Big Knob Studio Monitor Controller Interface gives you four sources and three monitor pairs rather than three sources and two monitor pairs and is the absolute must-have for anyone starting out or only has a tiny space to record. Prices at just under $200, this home studio is the way to go, especially during your holiday shopping.

The Verdict
The Big Knob is priced right, fits anywhere and can record just as good as any of the big studio sound booths.
