Lumberjanes #3 Zany to the Max

GameStop, Inc.

Lumberjanes_003_coverALumberjanes #3 finds the team in the cave they stumbles on last issue. Now, they have to work together as a team to find their way out. Then, they need to deal with their camp counselor.

Grace Ellis and Noelle Stevenson are clearly drawing from computer games for this entry into the Lumberjanes series. There are a series of crazy tasks, each one suited to a member of the team—or in one case, a particular pairing. The tasks themselves are also familiar: Jumping across chasms on stones, for example, or solving word-puzzles. Some of the strengths turn out to be the sort one would expect from previous encounters, one or two come a surprises. Who knew April was an arm wrestler?

Here is where the “all ages” comic may split by reader age: As a younger reader, I likely would have enjoyed the crazy adventure at its own value. As an adult reader, I do find myself wondering why Rosie has not hired more genre-savvy counselors or included at least some level of training in mythical beasts and beings.

Brooke Allen and Maarta Laiho combine to produce a colorful comic well-suited to the off-the-wall nature of the story itself. The backgrounds are vividly colored. Each girl maintains her distinctive look, even while wandering through deep underground caves.

Lumberjanes continues its zany, off-the-wall approach and continues to be a beautiful comic to look at. One cannot help but appreciate the effervescence apparent in the creators’ approach, and the girls’ teamwork remains a highlight of the book: These girls have “friendship to the max.” What the book still needs is a sense that the central mystery has some goal or aim; it is clear that the woods are truly, deeply weird, and that is a point in the comic’s favor. What is not yet clear is what, if any, rhyme or reason lies behind the insanity. It is an enjoyable comic that needs a little more traction to get past “just crazy” and into “strong story.”
