South Coast Repertory presents ‘Little Shop of Horrors‘. Cast (lt to rt): Holly Jackson (Ronnette), Celeste Butler (Chiffon), Emerson Boatwright (Seymour) and Joslynn Cortes (Crystal).
For the first time ever, heading into their 61st Season, South Coast Repertory’s production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors‘ is nothing short of spectacular! With book and lyrics Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, these future Disney Legends created a cult classic in 1982, based on the 1960 sci-fi horror film by Roger Corman and screenplay by Charles Griffith. Originally produced by the WPA Theatre and the Orpheum Theatre in New York City, this vibrant production runs from now to October 19, 2024, on the Segerstrom Stage, and is just as good as the 1986 movie musical.
Directed by the brilliant Jenn Thompson, ‘Little Shop of Horrors‘ bursts to life with electrifying energy. Holly Jackson delivers an unforgettable performance as Ronnette, absolutely stealing the show with her infectious enthusiasm and captivating stage presence. She dives into her role with such passion that it’s impossible to look away. Alongside her, Joslynn Cortes’ Crystal and Celeste Butler’s Chiffon are equally fantastic, bringing impeccable timing and vocal prowess that perfectly harmonizes the trios performance. Their chemistry creates a rich tapestry of emotion and humor, elevating every scene they inhabit.
Michelle Veintimilla is breathtaking as Audrey, embodying the character’s vulnerability and strength in a way that pulls at the heartstrings. Her vocal performance is stunning, imbuing the classic songs with fresh emotion that resonates deeply with the audience.

Emerson Boatwright is truly the best Seymour I’ve seen since Rick Moranis, capturing the character’s struggle and yearning in a way that feels both relatable and poignant for a character that does some unscrupulous, yet justifiable things for love. The narrative unfolds with delightfully keeping everyone engaged as Seymour navigates his complicated feelings for Audrey.
Derek Manson’s portrayal of Orin Scrivello, while a little too reminiscent of Steve Martin’s iconic performance in the 1986 adaptation, is still fantastic. Manson flair for the theatrics, delivering his lines with a manic energy that keeps the audience entertained.
Geoffrey Wade plays a kinder version of Mr. Mushnik, which adds a saddening layer to the story as he meets his end at the vines of Audrey II. Wade’s portrayal makes us genuinely care for Mushnik, enhancing the emotional stakes of the show.
A standout moment of the production is Joe Gallina’s manipulation of Audrey II—some of the best puppetry ever seen on stage. The plant is not just a backdrop; it is the ultimate antagonist, mesmerizing the audience with its dynamic movements and insatiable bloodlust. Gallina’s skill in bringing Audrey II to life adds an exhilarating layer to’Little Shop of Horrors‘, making the character both hilariously entertaining and terrifying.
The entire ensemble shines, harmonizing perfectly in this thrilling creature feature that’s as funny as it is hauntingly sweet. The choreography and musical numbers are impeccably executed, capturing the essence of doo-wop and Motown in a way that invites everyone to sing along.
