Nostalgia is a powerful thing, it is often the memories we hold onto of a property that makes it seem more significant than it actually was to history. However, when Nostalgia is blended with originality and one of the creators comes home, it can only be described as magical.
In this case of capturing that lightning-in-a-bottle, legendary comic creator Len Wein returns home to Swamp Thing. In this relaunch, Alec Holland aka Swamp Thing is under attack by dark magic, but this is different than what he’s faced before, this is something even more ominous, going beyond the things that go bump in the night and let’s be honest, a warning from the Phantom Stranger is never a good omen.
My introduction to Swamp Thing was the Wes Craven movie starring Adrienne Barbeau and Dick Durock, it wasn’t until much later that I started reading the comic and thanks to Wein who’s created so many amazing characters, I can appreciate Swamp Thing. Mix in Kelley Jones’ art and I am sure I will want to read issue two to see how the story unfolds…especially after the final page.
Swamp Thing Issue 1 is out today at comic shops and online.
