Latin Superhero Comic ‘Primos’ Releases Today from AMA

GameStop, Inc.

Title: Primos #1

Writer: Al Madrigal

Artist: Carlo Barberi

Colorist: Brian Reber

Publisher: Artists, Writers & Artisans (AMA)

Release Date: February 2, 2022

Representation in the arts, especially in the United States has become far more important than most people have ever thought. I know, being misrepresented so often in comics, like Marvel’s Captain Assyria, making him Sub-Saharan African instead of from Mesopotamia and Green Lantern Simon Baz looking Ethiopian in stead of Lebanese were two forms of misrepresentation in my own life, as I am Assyrian and Lebanese, but look very much from the Levant of West Asia and not Sub-Saharan African.

It is cliche at this point, but if you want to do something right, you have to do something yourself and that is exactly what creators Al Madrigal and Carlo Barberi have done with Primos, a new Latin superhero comic series, published by Artists, Writers & Artisans (AMA).

Primos unites three cousins scattered throughout Central and North America who have never met (this also sounds like an incredibly Middle Eastern story), bound by their ancient spacefaring Mayan lineage to the historical King Janaab, in order to save humanity from  total destruction.

Those who are familiar with comics, will recognize Barberi’s name instantly from his work on Deadpool, X-Men: Milestones, Avengers No Road Home, Spider-Geddon. Barberi blends Latin themes in his art to an American style creating cross-cultural interest that may have been lost on audiences that do not understand the specific artistic expression of Latin-American cultures.

Madrigal is able to bring humor and levity to an enriched story, created a world using ancient faiths mixed with science fiction that so few people are able to do this day and age.

One I absolutely appreciate the most about Madrigal’s writing is that he doesn’t fall into the trope of using Spanglish within every thought balloon to remind you these are Hispanic characters. That may have worked in the 1970s for El Dorado on Chico and the Man or Super Friends, but would be almost insulting today by various standards.

Primos is published in both Spanish and English, giving something for readers across the Americas. Something I appreciate. Now, just to ask some of my friends to get the Spanish version and compare the translations for me.

Al Madrigal and Carlo Barberi’s Primos #1 one builds a world of mysticism meets science fiction for audiences across the Americas. Maybe we will get an animated series out of this one.
