Co-Founder, Lizzy McCabe Talks About The Larking House Theatre Company and its upcoming world premiere, ‘The Party Clown‘ by Olivia Carter.
We recently had the chance to chat with Lizzy McCabe, the creative force behind The Larking House Theatre Company, about their upcoming world premiere play, ‘The Party Clown‘, and the journey that led to the creation of this innovative and artistically driven space.
The Larking House Theatre Company was founded with a clear mission: to provide a safe, collaborative, and challenging environment for emerging artists. The company’s core values center around fostering unique ideas, championing bold new works, and building a diverse collective of fresh artistic minds. McCabe explained that the company’s goal is to give artists the freedom and support they need to create, ensuring their voices are heard and that their needs are met. It’s about making space for those who might not otherwise have a platform, and McCabe is passionate about ensuring that the next generation of artists shines. “It’s time for this generation’s artists to have their light,” she says, emphasizing the importance of giving them opportunities to thrive.
One of the most fascinating aspects of The Larking House is its emphasis on discomfort in art. McCabe spoke candidly about how art is supposed to push boundaries and challenge the audience and the creators. “Sometimes, art needs to make you uncomfortable,” she remarked, acknowledging that the best and most thought-provoking pieces often do just that. It’s this commitment to creating work that is both bold and thought-provoking that sets The Larking House apart.
We also touched on the unique experience of performing in an unconventional space—a garage, in fact. McCabe shared that while performing in a garage might not seem glamorous, it adds a layer of intimacy and authenticity to the work. The rawness of the space amplifies the connection between the actors and the audience, creating an atmosphere where the boundaries between performer and spectator are blurred.
Now, as for ‘The Party Clown‘, the company’s latest project, McCabe couldn’t be more excited about the world premiere of this play by New York comedian Olivia Carter. Directed by Resident Artist Coleman Blue Summers, ‘The Party Clown‘ is a darkly comic and deeply emotional exploration that promises to take audiences on an unforgettable ride. The show features a talented cast, including Feyara Bellefleur as HER, Adriana Rodriguez Burciaga as CLOWN 1, Emily Neva Boliver as CLOWN 2, and James Menke as the DEMON VOICE.
McCabe’s vision for The Larking House is not only to create a space where artists can explore new ideas but also to provide audiences with a creative and emotionally rich experience. ‘The Party Clown‘ is an example of the company’s commitment to presenting bold, new works that are both daring and deeply resonant. It’s clear that The Larking House isn’t just a theatre company—it’s a movement, one that’s giving fresh voices the stage they deserve.
