In from Kino Lorber:

It’s Hard Being Loved by Jerks is the briskest, most hilarious and, in its subversive way, most inspiring film so far at Cannes.”

February 10, 2015 – New York, NY – Kino Lorber is proud to announce the acquisition of all US rights to the documentary IT’S HARD BEING LOVED BY JERKS, focused on the legal battle between the French magazine Charlie Hebdo and the Muslim French Council, after the magazine re-printed some of the controversial Danish cartoons, first published in 2005, depicting the prophet Muhammad.

With IT’S HARD BEING LOVED BY JERKS, director Daniel Laconte (Fidel Castro: L’enfance d’un chef) offers a real-time account of one of the most important trials in the 21st century and dives deep into the political, ideological and media-related stakes of the trial with all key participants. The film features lawyers, witnesses, the media, editorial conferences, demonstrations of support, as well as the reactions of the prosecutors and of Muslim countries.

Given new relevance after the January 7, 2015, attacks at the Charlie Hebdo offices, which left 12 dead and 11 wounded, IT’S HARD BEING LOVED BY JERKS also features candid interviews (and rarely seen behind-the-scenes moments) with acclaimed Charlie Hebdo cartoonists, such as Cabu, Charb, Tignous and Wolinski, who died on January 7.

This deal was negotiated between Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber andPyramide International’s Sales Director, Lucero Garzon, and the company’s Chief Executive Officer Éric Lagesse.

unnamed (7)Kino Lorber plans a theatrical release this spring, both in major US cities and in markets serviced by Emerging Pictures’ Rendez-Vous Near You contemporary French film series, a touring offshoot of the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema series programmed by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and UniFrance Films.

In addition, the film will be promoted to colleges, universities and libraries across the United States to inspire community discussion regarding freedom of the press, religious fundamentalism and the escalating confrontation between radical Islam and the West over democratic ideals.

“This documentary elucidates the innate conflict between the French ideal of liberty and the fundamentalist rejection of freedom of expression if it is deemed sacrilegious,” says Elizabeth Sheldon, SVP. “It will be a catalyst for conversation.”

When twelve cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad were published by Denmark’s largest newspaper in 2005, key Danish Muslim groups spoke against the cartoons. Days later, the protests against the Muhammad drawing took a worldwide scale, even leading to some violent demonstrations in some Muslim countries. In France, the satirical news magazine Charlie Hebdo joined the conversation by reprinting the controversial cartoons, also causing an uproar among the country’s growing Muslim population.

After authorizing the re-printing of the Muhammad cartoons, Charlie Hebdo’s editor Philippe Val was cited to court by the Great Mosque of Paris, the World Muslim League and the Union of Islamic Organizations of France. The accusations were defamation and incitement of hatred.

To no one’s surprise, publisher Philippe Val vigorously fought the charges. In the magazine’s defense was ample proof that Charlie Hebdo has mocked and criticized nearly all organized religions throughout the years – and in doing so, wasn’t singling out the Muslim world.
