Bernardo Ruiz who is known for his Emmy-Nominated film Reportero (which is still currently streaming on PBS.org all the way until October 2nd) is bringing us a new documentary with a different look at the drug war in the new documentary Kingdom of Shadows.
The film made by Boiling Pot and Quiet Pictures, being put out by Participant Media, will focus on the United States/Mexico relationship of the drug war as seen through various points of view. One of Sister Consuelo Morrales in Monterrey actively pushing the government and politicians to take action and respond to the 23,000 people who have gone missing since 2007. Texan Don Henry Ford Jr. offers his viewpoint as a small time smuggler in the eighties who got caught up smuggling pot. Oscar Hagelsieb rounds it up as a former undercover agent who moved into Homeland Security. Growing up as the son of undocumented immigrants and living in a poor neighborhood, he witnessed first hand what drugs can do to a neighborhood. He recalls the role the United States of America has had in the Drug War.
I personally have not seen a good drug war documentary since American Drug War: The Last White Hope. The trailer, however, really seems to have a fresh perspective and a lot of emotion behind it. In the journalistic world, this is one is a very daring and dangerous adventure; this documentary goes behind the enemy lines to give you a chilling story of what happens south of our country and how it affects us here, and all the victims left along the way. Movies like these are recommended watching for everyone.
The film will make a screening tour before hitting Video on Demand on November 17 and select theatrical releases in Los Angeles, New York, and other select cities.. See if it stops by near you.
