Justice Leak ‘Powers’ Supergirl’s Hellgrammite

GameStop, Inc.

Justice Leak is the undisputed example of Americana wrapped in the flag while being able to grow up in the historically significant and controversial city of Montgomery, AL.

His father was the youngest of four brothers, all of which went into the military and made the promise that if he returned home safely, he would name his children Liberty and Justice, a promise he kept. After returning from military service George Leak became a police officer, then a detective, moved on to being a state trooper and later, a hostage negotiator. All his policing background has inspired his mannerisms and procedures as Kutter on Sony’s adaptation of the Brian Michael Bendis comic, Powers.

“Playing a detective on Powers was a bit bitter sweet. Dad was sick and couldn’t visit the set before he passed. I carry his badge on the show and I feel closer to him. Now he’s got a front row seat,” said Leak about his later father.

Leak’s mother Doris, is a middle school teacher. After 30 plus years of teaching in Alabama, a state which has one of the worst pay scales for educators, Mama Leak moved to Atlanta, GA and will retire within in the next year or so to have a more comfortable life. His sister and her husband live literally across the street from Mrs. Leak as the good detective made sure she would be looked after in the wake of his passing.

The irony that most actors face is that they have overcome childhood shyness, of which Leak also endured. As in the case of most kids, he never wanted to stand out and would rather blend in, what came of that was a semester Abaline Christian University, which developed his love movies thanks to Romeo + Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. Following that one semester, he transferred to the University of Auburn to earn a degree in theatre arts.

All of this lead to Leak starring in two comic book series, the mentioned above Powers and the new CBS/Warner Bros. Television series Supergirl. There was a moment while shooting Supergirl where they were filming on a bridge, as they shut down the entire area as the City of Los Angeles was standing by the 6th Street Bridge watching what he was getting to do there. Leak said he had to pinch myself, wondering, “Is this really happening right now?”

He had experienced a lot of lows when starting out and has been working for quite awhile, but he recognizes he hasn’t been working as long as others and getting to do the big action sequence that aired this past Monday, Leak looked out over the city and for that moment, acknowledged he has the coolest job in the world and if others don’t believe it, he strongly disagrees — especially when getting to be the bad guy.

“I guess I have resting villain face. Maybe it’s unexpected. I feel like I’m playing catch up and so unworthy to do what I get to do because I didn’t read comics growing up, but I did consult with my friends and cousins who grew up with the genre. In that way I feel I missed out as a kid. Man, comic fans are the best fans in the world. No one is waiting to grab my autograph because I did an episode of Cold Case,” said Leak about lucking out with two comic book properties.

Seeing that resting villain face, one would never guess that Leak is probably one of the nicest people you will ever get to meet. During our phone interview he had to take a call from his agent and said he would call back. In LA, “I’ll call you back,” means, “If I remember.” Sure as you can image, Leak actually called back a few hours later after closing a deal and we continued on.

Splitting his time between Los Angeles and Atlanta, Leak is a Southern Gentleman who respects his mother and when filming only 20 minutes away from his family, will split the time between the hotel provided for him by Powers and his mother’s house.

“Mom will offer to get me breakfast before going to the set on her way to school, forgetting that they provide food for us on the set. She can’t stop being mom and it’s adorable, she gets joy from taking care of other,” said Leak.

If you ever get a chance to meet Justice Leak, don’t hesitate to say hello. He is as gracious and humble as they come, someone you wouldn’t expect to be in an industry notorious for egoistical behavior.

“What does it look like to give someone your credit card hoping it goes through when paying a meal? My life looks different than it did a year and a half ago. Michael Caine said, ‘I act for free. They pay me to put up with the bulls**t.’ I’m not really stressed when I’m working. Even during an audition…most of my acting in my life will be seen by two-or-three people and that’s it, but I also did that character and gave a performance. Like the theater, it lives and dies with the performance. I tell stories and love what I do, it’s something inside me and I’m the luckiest guy in the world,” said Leak.

Leak’s next project is the film Mena, slated for a 2017 release. In the meantime, catch Powers and let’s hope the Hellgrammite returns later in the season of Supergirl.
