John Carpenter Hosts the Premiere of ‘The People’s Network Showcase’ on El Rey

GameStop, Inc.

From El Rey Network – Austin, TX, September 22, 2016 – El Rey Network announced today the launch of a new series of specials featuring short films from stand-out independent filmmakers from around the world.  “The People’s Network Showcase” will air as a 2-hour quarterly programming event.

“The People’s Network Showcase: Horror Edition”, hosted by the master of horror films John Carpenter, and featuring 10 short horror films submitted by rising independent filmmakers, will debut on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 8pm ET, with an encore airing at 10pm ET.  It will air as part of El Rey’s month long celebration of Horror “Blood, Sweat and Fears.”

“When I started El Rey I wanted the network to provide a new pipeline for creators.  My roots are in independent filmmaking and I believe in providing opportunities to people working outside of the studio system,” said El Rey Network founder and Chairman Robert Rodriguez.  “We’ve discovered these terrific short films by very talented makers and with this on-air special hosted by my friend John Carpenter, we can help get them noticed.”

“Whether for digital or linear, programming is no longer dictated from the top down. Audiences today know what they want, and in many cases are able to make it themselves,” said El Rey Network President and G.M. Daniel Tibbets.  “The People’s Network is our disruptive tool to demolish the wall between Professional and User Generated Content.”

“The People’s Network” celebrates filmmakers and artists from diverse cultures by giving them a platform to showcase their work.  The new on-air series will feature interviews with the filmmakers and special vignettes of current working industry professionals who share the behind the scenes secrets of their craft to inspire future creators. Each collection of films that airs will be curated by genre or central story theme.

Filmmakers can submit their films to El Rey Network’s People’s Network here:

About John Carpenter

Carpenter’s breakthrough film was Halloween (1978), the seminal horror film; made for $300,000, it was the most profitable independent movie of its day, and to date has spawned several sequels.  Following Halloween, he further established his reputation with such genre hits as The Fog, They Live, Prince Of Darkness, the psychological horror film, In The Mouth Of Madness, Christine and The Ward. His rank as an action director on a wider scale is also evident in such productions as Escape From New York, Vampires, The Thing, Ghosts Of Mars, Escape From L.A. and Big Trouble In Little China.  His motion picture credits also include the comedy-thriller, Memoirs Of An Invisible Man, the sci-fi love story, Starman, which earned Jeff Bridges a Best Actor Oscar nomination, and Village Of The Damned, the terrifying remake of the classic 1950s horror story.   For the small screen, Carpenter directed the thriller Someone’s Watching Me, the acclaimed biographical mini-series, Elvis, and the Showtime horror trilogy John Carpenter Presents Body Bags.  He also directed two episodes of Showtime’s Masters Of Horror series.
