Jay and Silent Bob Reboot Returns to Jersey via Blu-ray Today

GameStop, Inc.

When I heard that Jay And Silent Bob Reboot was getting a feature release at San Diego Comic-Con from the fan owned studio, Legion M, I instantly said, “Yeah, I’ll wait for the home release.” Thankfully, I followed my intuition and was I ever glad that I waited.

I wholeheartedly believe that if I had made the trek up to Hollywood to watch this one on the big screen for a press viewing that I would have been absolutely miserable, with my reaction most likely having been, “I sat in traffic for that!?!” Fortunately, I learned my lesson not to do that again for a Kevin Smith movie after Tusk, but I am pleased to say, that sitting at home, on my couch, in my pajamas, sipping coffee that Jay And Silent Bob Reboot was actually enjoyable. It’s quite possible that my expectations were so low that anything north of atrocious (again, Tusk being my stoner Kevin Smith marker) that I would be able to sit through the entire 90 plus minutes.

It was fun revisiting Smith’s Askewniverse and being reminded how much I loved Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma (until the giant poop monster showed up). I even admit that Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks II are guilty pleasures.

Yes, it was fun in how Smith made fun of remakes and reboots as he made fun of Hollywood’s lack of creativity by showing his lack of creativity in stealing lines from his own films to tell the story for Jay And Silent Bob Reboot takes shots at political correctness, forcing ethnic and gender diversity in movies that shoe horn them into their remakes and reboots and in all honesty longing to revisit the original films (I’m looking at you RoboCop 2014!).

It was nice to see a reunion between Smith and Ben Affleck on camera though as it appeared they fully buried the past on camera in a heartfelt moment, as well as praising “Batfleck.” I liked that Smith was able to poke fun at himself and Jason Mewes, even throwing in that his daughter Harley Quinn Smith looks more like Jay, by making him her absentee father in this flick.

Jay And Silent Bob Reboot never takes itself seriously, but after awhile, the constant wink to the audience does get tiresome and the notion that superfans called it, “meta” is a bit much. Jay And Silent Bob Reboot will most likely end up in the super secret, guilty pleasure pile, but it will have to sit on my shelf for a few years before I can bring myself to sneaking it out to the living room for a late night viewing.

Jay And Silent Bob Reboot is available now on Digitial, Blu-ray and DVD.

  • Overall Score

Jay And Silent Bob Reboot is definitely a guilty pleasure and might have a life as a midnight movie at indie movie houses.
