We find out how the Resident Evil CGI movies advance the lore of Resident Evil in our interview with Resident Evil: Vendetta’s Supervising Producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi
Resident Evil: Vendetta is now available on digital and will be available on Blu-Ray July 18th. It’s getting mixed reviews, but I personally really enjoyed it. The action is thrilling, and it has some truly creepy elements. We previously interviewed Erin Cahill and Matthew Mercer and got their perspectives on the film and their thoughts on zombies. Now we get to hear from Mr. Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who has been involved with the Resident Evil Series since he was a programmer on the first game. He definitely has a favorite character, and if he has a say, we know who will star in the next film.
Kevin: How were the fight scenes choreographed and executed?
Hiroyuki: The parts with intense action and movement are done by the motion capture actors.
Kevin: What was your role as the supervising producer of Resident Evil: Vendetta?
Hiroyuki: My responsibility in the film was to make sure that the world of Resident Evil represented in the movie was true to the game. This also included making sure the three main characters [Chris Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, and Rebecca Chambers] were properly portrayed.
Kevin: How do you choose which characters will be in the Resident Evil CGI movies?
Hiroyuki: Personally, I wanted Leon to be the main character and the producers wanted Chris. So, those two were already determined. Then lastly, for the female lead, I really wanted Rebecca to come back, so I made that decision and the producers accepted it.
Kevin: How do you decide which stories will be used for the movies and which will be used for the games?
Hiroyuki: We already chose Chris and Leon, so [placing the story] after the 6th installment of the games was really appropriate. Then when the Rebecca idea came along- you know the last time we saw audience saw her she was 18, and it’s been awhile since we seen her; close to 10 or 20 years. So it was decided we’d explore how much she’s matured. Then we develop the storyline around the three characters.
Kevin: Aside from Resident Evil what other zombie franchises do you like?
Hiroyuki: I myself have had enough of zombies. After this [Resident Evil] I like to focus on things without zombies.
Kevin: If you could choose any of the Resident Evil characters to help you survive a zombie apocalypse, who would it be?
Hiroyuki: I would like to have Leon protect me.
Kevin: What can we expect the next Resident Evil CGI movie to be about?
Hiroyuki: There’s nothing planned yet, but if I get to choose, I would like to focus on Leon and develop the character more.
