With Avengers: Age of Ultron just over a month away, focus has already diverted as to the future of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and towards the future of the cinematic franchise. Last year, the godfather of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, announced that the third Avengers film would be split into two parts – Infinity War Part 1 coming in May 2018, Infinity War Part 2 coming May 2019. Since it was announced, rumors have swirled that Joe and Anthony Russo would be taking over the director’s chair from Joss Whedon. In the meantime, however, the news broke of Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and countless other rumors have been circulated.
Today, brings the first concrete news concerning the Infinity War – Devin Faraci over at Badass Digest was able to get the scoop and confirm that the deal is done and the Russos are onboard for both installments of the Infinity War. From his report:
Joe and Anthony Russo will follow up Captain America: Civil War by graduating to Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and 2. The movies should shoot back-to-back in 2016 and 2017.
There are no writers on it yet, but I’m told that Marvel is in talks with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the guys who wrote the three Captain America movies as well as did work on Thor: The Dark World and helped create Agent Carter. Basically it’s about keeping the band together moving forward, with the Russos and Markus and McFeely all being really on the same page and working together well. I imagine that this will become official shortly.
The Russos have always been known for their work in comedy, having directed episodes of Community and Arrested Development, but they broke the mold greatly when they made Captain America: The Winter Soldier one of the more entertaining popcorn flicks of the summer. With Captain America: Civil War readying to start production soon, it’s nice to see that Joe and Anthony Russo will sticking with Marvel for the very immediate future.
