Founded in Irvine, CA in 2009, ImprovCity Provides a World of Laughter in Old Town Tustin, CA with Classes and Shows for various age groups.
Although the headline is slightly misleading, ImprovCity (if memory serves me correctly) initially ran over a bowling alley near Boomers Family Fun Center in Irvine, CA. Now housed in a storefront on Main Street in Tustin, CA, ImprovCity is filled with fresh talent, some young, some young at heart, bringing laughs to you via short-form improvised games, scenes, and songs in a high-energy comedic style.
I had always wanted to visit, but never had a chance to do so, until my friend Akram was telling me about their drop in improv classes on Monday nights. For $10, you get to test out a class while clowning around with other novices or comedians.
Last night I decided to check out their Sunday evening show. Doors opened at 7 p.m. and the show promptly began at 7:30, upon entering we were greeted by man named Yash, he was extremely kind and graciously filled us in on where the concession stand and restrooms were while letting us know setting was general admission.
The cast included six players, Lena Anani, Jamie Dana, Kyle Goulston, Michael Lancaster, Vesper North and Juan Velasco, with hostess Megan Manning.
This initial improvisational show featured songs, various games and audience participation ran for nearly an hour and a half and was followed by a second, 30-minute show entitled Story Time, which runs the first and third Sunday of every month. Story Time is a long form improvisation show very loosely based on real life events suggested by audience members featuring Clayton James, Asic Khatchatryan and Andrew Livingston.
ImprovCity also offers kids and teens workshops along with adult classes.
What was most enjoyable about ImprovCity (aside from the hilarious hijinks) was how welcoming every cast member was to all attendees and if I had not asked, I would not have learned that Devin Dugan, who ran the concession stand was also the co-owner and co-founder of ImprovCity. The conversation was sparked by the mini movie posters in the back and a few signed pictures of my Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling (GLOW) friends.
