In the future there will be only one human being left. His name is Z, he’s a bounty hunter. He also happens to have a chronic case of short term memory loss. I feel it’s important to mention that he can live forever. Darryl Knickrehm gives us a great book called The Immortal #1.
Darryl Knickrehm both writes and draws The Immortal #1, along with the other five books in the series. I want to start off and talk about the world building in the story. Darryl keeps it lite and isn’t too heavy with the details. He respects the intelligence of the reader, in trusting them to connect the dots with the information given. The world is explained enough so that it doesn’t get in the way of the story.
I’d like to talk about the main character in The Immortal #1, “Z.” Z makes his living off of collecting bounties across the galaxy. I like reading about hard nosed antagonist, but I especially like it when there is a twist to their situation. Being the lone human in the galaxy, gives Darryl a lot of room to play in. On top of being the only human, he’s also immortal. So the reader has all these questions about Z, and Darryl gives compelling reasons to care about him.
The world in which Z lives in, is interesting. As a fan of science fiction I’m always excited to see the aliens. Darryl does not hold back. I like the fact that they’re not all humanoid. He writes in some real weird looking ones. Robots are a plenty as well. I also got a kick out of Z’s weapon of choice.
Writing a great book is one thing, but to draw is, another. Just for clarification, I don’t knock down art scores if its only in black and white. With that out of the way, Darryl is a top notch talented artist. His use of negative space is amazing. Black and white hasn’t felt this cool since Cerebus. Darryl has a penchant for detail and panel flow. I like it when the artist can write, because we get to see it, like he sees it. With this book its hard to tell if Darryl is an artist first or a writer.
Overall I highly recommend getting this book. Its a weird and wonderful take on the future. Reading it, gave me the feeling I had when I first watched “The Fifth Element.” You can support Darryl Knickrehm on his Patreon Page. There you can also catch up on the other books in his series.
