arzan is one of the heroes of the pulp age and his adventures continue to fascinate the imagination. While Tarzan is no stranger to being rebooted, IDW takes different approach by preserving the King of the Jungle’s newspaper strips. In the first volume that collects Russ Manning’s extraordinary Tarzan stories, we are treated to a bevy of adventures that are typical of the time period, but are still exciting in their own right. Tarzan, Jane, and their son Korak are not strangers to danger as they are tossed into one situation after the other as the pages turn. Tarzan battles foes deep in hidden kingdoms with un-evolved humanoid creatures, he must throw off the advances of beautiful women, pretend to be a god in places lost to time, and, of course, save Jane when she is captured. Korak has his own adventures akin to his father’s and when their paths cross they team up for even bigger storylines.

2013-02-PR-Tarzan Newspapers are a dying breed, but back when they had higher circulation comic strips had to end on an exciting note each time to keep the reader coming back. Collected together they make a seamless, riveting story that is still enjoyable to read decades after the first printing. Pure adventure stories like this are rare these days, especially when they are forced to include romance and other dramatic elements. Despite still being a thrilling read, the Tarzan comics do show their age when it comes to their female characters. When Jane is not being captured, she spends all of her time waiting for Tarzan and Korak to come home. Other female characters either try to seduce the male heroes or need rescuing of their own. One would think that living in Africa would make the women in Tarzan’s life more independent, but women’s liberation had yet to cross the ocean.

As a stand alone comic Tarzan is still a fun read, despite some old-fashioned ideas. The art also withstands the test of time better in black and white than in the colored panels. Readers can see Manning’s careful attention to detail in the black and white comics that do a better job of telling the story than the word balloons. The women are beautiful and the men have chiseled physiques that express an idealism and fantasy. As a historical piece, the Tarzan comics represent a time when newspapers were a place to turn for adventure stories rather than a small chuckle. This collection serves as a time capsule as well as an exciting page turner.
