Hostile Border follows the misadventures of Claudia (Veronica Sixtos), an alien without documentation who was found guilty of credit card fraud and is deported to her home country of Mexico. The problem is Claudia was raised in the United States and speaks virtually no Spanish. She moves onto her father Andres’ (Julio Cesar Cedillo) ranch in hopes of finding a way to return to the United States while escaping his iron rule.
Along the way she associates with one her father’s ranch-hands, Arturo (Jorge A. Jimenez), who teaches her the meaning of hard word and earning your keep. The life lessons Claudia learns on the ranch are not the ideal conditions she’s become accustom to in the United States and thanks to Arturo’s entanglements she now has to work with Ricky (Roberto Urbina) a slick talking coyote who promises to return her to the life she once knew if she agrees to let him slip past her father to do his dirty business. Claudia rides a very thin line between the structured world of her father and the underworld that Ricky rules.
Director Michael Dwyer tells a fascinating story of how trying to do things the easy way can come out and bite you in the behind. Claudia is the girl that wants it all but goes about the wrong way to get it and it is very clear that her amoral lifestyle is the cause for all her problems.
A beautifully shot and emotionally haunting film, Hostile Border is one movie that needs to be seen by all audiences in spite of its R rating. Nothing is ever is as simple as it seems and with every secret comes a consequence in this world of deceit. Cedillo, Urina and Sixtos give performances that are worthy of an Independent Spirit Award nomination.
