“Hi, My Name Is…” Fresh Off the Boat 221 Review

Hi, My Name Is… Shows us what’s in a name.

Hi, My Name Is

Fresh Off the Boat continues to deliver cultural appreciation and personal values under the guise of a family sitcom. The show’s 21st episode of their second season titled Hi, My Name Is has the Huang family going to the bank. After Eddie breaks the toaster trying to create a sandwich with Pop-Tarts and a bagel, the bagel is the meat, the family decides to sign Evan up for a new bank account to get a new toaster. As Evan is gushing about his pride in his name as he is about to sign the forms, Jessica reveals it was a random name they chose from one of the nurses. This rattles Evan’s world, and the family then takes turns revealing the supposedly insignificant ways they got the names they are known by. Many ethnic people know this as choosing their “American Names.”

Jessica got her American name after the unnecessary difficulty she faced trying to proudly keep her Chinese name. This was done so in a genius way, by not only having Jessica learn about it in a branding lesson but, the use of ‘Butte Juice” as the example of the lesson. Louis shares how his love for Jessica, and experimentation with cheap all you can eat seafood, led to him getting his name. Eddie sets up the episode’s lesson of, “making a name for youself,” with a very colorful example that featured Shaq and Busta Rhymes; it flies way over the head of everyone else in the family. However, Grandma Huang drives it home, “… names don’t matter… Your name doesn’t make you. You make your name.”Hi, My Name Is

“But, by giving myself name that was easier for everyone to pronounce, I was opening the door to more opportunity” – Jessica Huang

Hi, My Name Is… is an outstanding episode with a great message. It also covers an issue that is widespread among minorities, and that’s our name. Personally, Kevin is my only name. I don’t even have a nickname, whereas the majority of my family has their birth/English name and their Chinese name. I’m just saying mom, you’re half Chinese and I’m 3/4, how do you have one of those and I don’t? I should have a Chinese name and a half by that standard. My last name is even Chinese… Anyway, I am fortunate enough to not have to deal with the dilemma of having a difficult to pronounce name. If I don’t have a picture attached, my name is ambiguous as it gets. However, many face the dilemma of not getting acknowledged or even noticed because people will rather not say your name than get it wrong. The funny thing is that is being polite. So minorities are faced with identifying to America’s cultural standard, or pridefully dealing with any difficulties their not typically printed on a Coke Can name may bring. I can go on this topic for quite a bit, so either ask me to write a piece up in the comments or wait the unforeseen amount of years for me to write it in my blog.

Hi, My Name Is

“Your name doesn’t make you. You make your name.” – Grandma Huang

I apologize for going off on a personal tangent, but that is another great part of the show. I can finally see myself in the program that I am watching. But, I’ll get back to the show and stay away from the heavy. Hi, My Name Is… continues to tell great stories full of real meaning and simultaneously making everyone laugh. The episode had three major guess stars: J.B. Smoove reprises his role as Barry, Shaq cameos as himself as president of the future, and Jalen Rose as Cool Louis. Jalen Rose could use some acting lesssons though. He had the look and the body language down, but his tone and inflection were way off. You can’t be cool when you sound entirely confused.

Hi, My Name Is… Verdict

Hi, My Name Is

FRESH OFF THE BOAT – “Hi, My Name Is…” – Evan is thrilled to open his first bank account, but is unsure if he should use his American name or his Chinese name on the account. This leads to Louis and Jessica revealing how each of them acquired their American names and reminiscing about the first time they met, on ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat,” airing on TUESDAY, APRIL 26 (8:00-8:30 p.m. EDT). (ABC/Nicole Wilder)

Episode 221 is another strong episode that brings more than just laughs. This time around the message may landed a bit more than the comedy did. Eddie’s constant food adventures are always pleasant, but his outthere fantasy wasn’t as strong as they normally are. It was partially saved by Jessica chiming in during and after, but I feel Shaq and Busta were a bit underused. I was hoping Busta would have had an impact more similar to the one he had on Master of None. Jalen Rose also wasn’t able to deliver the comedy, and I feel as how his part was one of the big 3 points of the episode (no basketball pun intended) his missing the mark kind of hurt the overall impact of the episode. Still, despite the slight mediocre performances, Hi, My Name Is is still an extremely fun episode with a great message to take away.

Fresh Off the Boat is on ABC, Tuesday at 8:00/7:00c

The Verdict

The episode features some bland performances at a few crucial points, but the takeaway message is strong and easily received. Also, Fresh Off the Boat might have dropped the greatest philosophical line of all time, “The bagel is the meat.” Think about it. Or watch the episode and get it right away.
