Harbinger Omegas #3 (of 3)

GameStop, Inc.

HAR_OMEGAS_003_VARIANT_FABRYHarbinger: Omegas has taken the battle between the Renegades and Harada into unexpected territory. The Renegades “won,” but they are the ones falling apart. Harada, on the other hand, has lost only his camouflage, and he is not letting that slow him down at all. Joshua Dysart has avoided creating a standard super villain here: Harada is not interested in revenge; he’s interested in ruling the world, and he has no intention of letting a few confiscated accounts and a somewhat tarnished image slow him down. In fact, as one exasperated politician observes, Peter Stanchek’s actions have made life harder for Harada’s opponents, not easier.

Even as he goes into full Overlord mode, Harada is still posing as a public benefactor. He may be conquering countries and killing anyone sent against him, but he is determined to build a hospital, feed the poor, and prove to everyone that the world would really be much better off if it would only submit to him. Dyart has created a character compelling enough that it is possible to buy into Harada’s story: He may be completely ruthless, but he is also efficient, dynamic, and impressive,. Once again, it is clear why his people follow him—and also why the rest of the world is not convinced that surrender is the best idea.

Stanchek is, for the moment, too busy with drugs to be any sort of a threat to Harada. In fact, he spends some of the time being told off by a fish. What, after all, is there for a hero to do after he has won and found the victory hollow?

The art is the high quality I have come to expect of Valiant comics. Rafa Sandoval draws characters with a number of different power-sets, keeping them distinctive. There are several strong action poses as the psiots focus their power. David Garcia Cruz’s colors add dimension and ensure that the psiots who stand still to focus still appear to be in action, keeping the book moving. The artists also know when to leave the background white to intensify a conversation.

Harbinger: Omegas showcases the new Harada, the one who is not bothering to hid his power or his desires. If you like your super villains to have clear goals and intelligent plans, this is the book for you.

Harbinger: Omegas #3 is available October 29 from Valiant Comics.
