Today brings us the first trailer for one of 2017’s most anticipated films, Guillermo Del Toro‘s The Shape of Water. The horror master looks to have brought us another blend of the joys of a fairy tale with the dark, disturbing aspects of horror, a blend of whimsy and terror that runs throughout his impressive filmography.
The Shape of Water stars Sally Hawkins as a mute woman working in top secret laboratory where a mysterious aquatic creature is being studied in the midst of the Cold War. Co-starring with Hawkins are Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, the venerable Richard Jenkins, the always magnificent Michael Shannon, and the ever-reliable Michael Stuhlbarg. Once again, Del Toro collaborates with Doug Jones, who played a similar creature in the Hellboy movies for the acclaimed director.
Fox Searchlight is betting big on The Shape of Water to be a legit Oscar contender this year. We’ll see how Guillermo Del Toro’s latest work fares in the Oscar landscape when The Shape of Water lands in theaters on December 9, 2017.
