Yesterday it was announced that Jason Reitman, the director of The Front Runner and Young Adult as well as son of Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, would be taking the reins of a new Ghostbusters films set after the events of Ghostbusters 2. There’s no word on which members (if any) of the original cast are returning but the film will be written by the younger Reitman and Monster House director Gil Kenan. Sony Pictures is aiming for a Summer 2020 release and they’ve already released the first teaser for the film which has been referred to as “secret,” though I’d argue this publicity blitz kinda blows the lid off any secrecy.
EW had the first teaser for the film earlier today, which, if I’m being frank, is pretty lame. It’s a very dramatic presentation of a car with a logo. That’s it. It’s simply a tease for more teases. Marketing for an impending marketing campaign.
I have plenty of issues with this latest Ghostbusters news — from the fact that the project is pure nepotism, as Jason Reitman’s recent track record doesn’t suggest he’s earned a blockbuster franchise and the way everyone involved just wants to pretend that Paul Feig‘s hilarious 2016 all-female reboot just doesn’t exist. Of course, I’m not going to write off the film without seeing it in its entirety, but there’s something about this project that reeks of trying to placate the most toxic elements of fandom who condemned Feig’s film before seeing a single frame.
Check out the teaser below for Jason Reitman’s upcoming Ghostbusters film which currently has no title and no cast ahead of its planned release in the summer of 2020.
