George Huang and Sung Kang Talk ‘Weekend in Taipei’ – Interview

GameStop, Inc.

Director and co-writer, George Huang and co-star Sung Kang talk about ‘Weekend in Taipei‘ in theaters now and on VOD.

Directed and co-written by George Huang (‘Swimming with Sharks‘, ‘The Invisible Man‘) alongside the legendary Luc Besson (‘Léon: The Professional‘, ‘La Femme Nikita‘), ‘Weekend in Taipei‘ is a captivating film that brilliantly blends East and West, both thematically and stylistically, in its portrayal of modern action. The filmmakers expertly navigate the intersection of cultures, infusing the action genre with emotional depth and cultural richness, all while maintaining a fast-paced, thrilling narrative.

Sung Kang is such a talented actor, that his role of Kwang, Joey’s husband and John’s target, almost made me hate the man in real life. The character goes beyond the brooding, chill bad guy. Out side his, “businesses”, Joey and Raymond are his world and that weakness is what could also be his downfall.

The plot thickens with the introduction of Raymond, Joey’s young son, played by Wyatt Yang in a standout feature film debut. Raymond is not only a beacon of innocence in a world of moral gray areas but also a catalyst for John’s emotional journey. The relationship between John, Joey, and Raymond adds an unexpected layer of complexity to the story, as John’s growing attachment to both the woman and her child forces him to question his loyalties and values. This familial dynamic deepens the tension, making John’s mission feel intensely personal.

Set against the dynamic, neon-lit landscape of Taipei, ‘Weekend in Taipei‘ presents a city that is both a character in its own right and a reflection of the movie’s central themes. The vibrant urban backdrop enhances the story’s mood, as the bustling streets and towering skyscrapers of the city juxtapose the quieter, more intimate moments between the characters. The film’s cinematography is a standout, capturing the contrasts between the exhilarating, high-stakes action sequences and the quiet emotional beats, showcasing both the tension of undercover work and the beauty of Taipei’s modernity.

During the North American premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival, George Huang shared that one of the greatest compliments he received was from the world premiere in Taiwan was that Taiwanese audiences who praised the film for its accurate and respectful portrayal of Taiwan’s contemporary culture. As a Taiwanese-American filmmaker, Huang was especially moved by this recognition, which confirmed that he had succeeded in highlighting the modernity and beauty of his heritage while telling a gripping, universally resonant story.

Huang and Kang reflected on the unique experience of filming in Taipei, noting how the city’s bustling energy and striking scenery created a sense of immersion and authenticity that enriched the storytelling. The international reception of ‘Weekend in Taipei‘ has been overwhelmingly positive, with audiences around the world appreciating its blend of action, emotion, and cultural depth.

Now playing in theaters, ‘Weekend in Taipei‘ offers a fresh take on the action genre, seamlessly combining personal stakes with pulse-pounding excitement. Fans of both Western and Eastern cinema will find much to appreciate in this exciting, emotionally resonant film that introduces new talent, brings fresh perspectives to the action genre, and celebrates the vibrant allure of Taipei.
