With seemingly every television program from the ‘80s and ‘90s being revived, it’s actually stunning when a bit of news comes along that doesn’t nurture my inner-cynicism. Today Variety is reporting that Paramount Television is actively shopping a television version of the cult classic sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest. From the Variety report:
Robert Gordon, who co-wrote the DreamWorks feature with David Howard, is in negotiations to work on the TV adaptation, as are original director Dean Parisot and executive producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein.
Having the original creative crew behind Galaxy Quest onboard for the potential series is the best possible news. Most of all, this is exciting because the world of Galaxy Quest isn’t fully defined. There isn’t a canon to betray. As a matter of fact, they have a blank canvas where they can lampoon a variety of sci-fi tropes, especially the ones that have been fortified in the 15-plus years since the film debuted. There’s no other details about the series out there right now, but here’s hoping that the good people behind Galaxy Quest heed the words of Commander Peter Quincy Taggart and “Never give up. Never surrender.”
