Future Comic Rock Stars – Tiernen Trevallion

GameStop, Inc.

Welcome to my weekly column showcasing up and coming or undiscovered talent, bringing to your attention artists that I feel will be break-out stars in the near future. Some are already well on their way to super stardom, while some are just on the outskirts.

Everyone has a favorite comic book artist. One they’ve discovered recently, or maybe followed from the very beginning of their career. Some have so many favorites it’s hard to choose just one. Every single one of those artists started somewhere, be it by producing photocopied mini comics to sell at their neighborhood comic shop, getting a table in the artist’s alley at their local comic convention, posting images to deviantart.com, or doing commissions through the internet or at conventions. There are so many different ways to break into the American comic industry.

Tiernen Trevallion has yet to do that, but give him time, and his name will be synonymous with “comic artist” in America. Already a professional in the UK, Tiernen’s art has graced numerous issues of 2000AD and The Megazine, both covers and interiors, as well as album covers for FAROUTLAW, Malpractise, and Bad Company UK. He has done concept design work for Doctor Who: Dreamland for the BBC, From Beyond for Shoreline Entertainment, and a lot of different Warhammer 40K campaigns for Games Workshop.

He has taken his pen to Judge Dredd, Sinister Dexter, and Absalom: Ghosts of London with writer Gordon Rennie, and has a fantastic pin-up in the upcoming Merrick: The Sensational Elephant Man comic. With his ability to switch up his style, yet still remain recognizable, his art exemplifies the best of what comics from the UK have to offer. Like some magical mixture of the best of Mike Mignola and Dave Johnson, Tiernen’s style is at once familiar, yet made wholly his own.

He has an amazing sense of color, sometimes using a simple mix of two opposing colors to great dramatic affect, and other times using a painterly style with a staggeringly diverse palette. Even his simple black and white sketches are dripping with a moodiness that other established artists can’t match. His characters pop right off the page, and with a style that is so kinetic, you can almost feel the punches thrown in his action scenes.

Tiernen may not be a well known name in the US yet, but with his dynamic page layouts, complex panel arrangements, fine attention to detail and texture, and his exciting color choices, he is definitely one to watch, surely a Future Comic Rock Star.

Be sure to follow his work here and here.
