FunKon 2021 – Funko’s hybrid in-person and online convention to celebrate fans both near and far in the first-ever official Funko Convention

With things sort of going back to normal, Funko is bringing the convention experience to fans near and far with FunKon 2021! SDCC was @Home again this year, so that leaves many of the staples of the world’s biggest convention without their traditional home. And one of those staples is easily Funko, who I personally know has had an ever-increasing presence at the convention since at least 2013. I was able to get my SDCC Exclusive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Funko Pops by scanning the barcode from the flyer they had on their window. Then there is also Funko Fundays, which is a giant Funko party that is chalked full of guests, giveaways, and good times. Funko has grown exponentially, not just as a cornerstone of San Diego Comic-Con, but as a pop culture entity. And FunKon is, what I believe, Funko’s first foray into in-house conventions. From the press preview alone, Funko is ready to fully utilize their awesome Funko Hollywood Store to welcome fans into a unique experience only they can deliver.

Joe Manganiello (L) & Funko CEO Bob Mariotti (R) at FunKon 2021 Press Conference

Being immersed in numerous worlds populated by their iconic Funko Pops is always a fun experience. Add in new exclusives and Funko Games and there is really no reason to leave. At the press event, we were also fortunate to be part of a press conference where we learned how FunKon came about to celebrate the fans since with an in-person event as they would as SDCC, but also reach as many Funko Fans as possible. And we got to sit in on a chat with Joe Manganiello and Funko CEO Bob Mariotti where they pretty much gush over their love of Dungeons and Dragons and Joe Manganiello regaled us with how he performs inappropriate acts with his and his wife’s Funko Pops to distract her as she gets ready for events. It was a casual conversation but did feature an inspiring message of pursuing your passions. Manganiello was a devout Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) player, before “football and girls” distracted him. But his love of the game has inspired much of his creative projects and he now works on D&D stuff. He pursued his passion as a side project but it did eventually get to become full-time for a while. Also, Manganiello wants more D&D Pops and Mariotti seems to be a guy who plays a big part in making that possible, so there is also that to look forward too. Manganiello is headed to Ireland soon to shoot his new show for AMC.

What most fans care about most though are Funko’s Exclusives. One of the best things about Funko, is that they really do have something for everyone. Funko had their exclusives marvelously displayed and let us get up close and personal. If you follow our Instagram, you could see videos I took, but if you missed that I provided the pictures of them in the gallery below, as well as the shared retailers list (Above) for fans who are not particular to the FunKon Exclusive sticker you can only get from FunKon online and in-person sales.

Funko also featured their Loungefly Exclusive products.

FunKon 2021

Of everything FunKon had to offer, what stood out most were Funko Games. I have played Funkoverse, which was a lot of fun. But I did not realize everything else Funko Games had to offer. They have a Goonies Game, The Goonies: Never Say Die, with an expansion soon to release. The Mickey and the Beanstalk game is gorgeously crafted and features game pieces that slide down the beanstalk!

The It’s a Small World game that beautifully recreates the ride in board game form. The Mad Tea Party game requires some balance and dexterity. The games range from simple games meant for everyone, to hardcore games that require a game master. All the games are made with a rich dearth of fandom that references even the deepest cut, like the octopus in The Goonies that was only featured in the deleted scenes. We’ll start to cover the games more deeply in Dicey Gaming, but each game is designed with fandom and fun at every level. Each game is gorgeous and most would be awesome decorative pieces for any collection, in the box or set up. But the gameplay really makes you feel like you’re part of the franchise. It is the epitome of art, fun, and commerce.

FunKon has fun in the name and fun will definitely be had by those who attend. Funko has brought their SDCC experience home, and I believe have started a new and soon to be an even bigger annual event that Funko Fans will love and enjoy. Exclusive Funkos, experience, and a glimpse into Funko Games is a great way to spend the day. FunKon 2021 starts tomorrow. Be sure to follow Funko on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to join in on the virtual festivities.
