Frozen II Out Today on 4K and Blu-ray Combo

GameStop, Inc.

Disney had a long standing tradition of not making sequels for their princess animated features and after seeing Frozen II, I wish they had stuck to that mindset.

On paper it had everything going for it. A built in audience, check. The original cast returns, check. Catchy songs that will have your kids screaming at the top of their lungs on long car rides, double check. So, what didn’t mesh? Well, I didn’t like that the first third of the movie crammed in as many songs as it possibly could then then forget about any singing for the next 45 minutes.

I went from thinking, Uhh, how many more songs do I have to listen to?, to, Wait, wasn’t this a musical? Shoehorn in racial tensions in a region of the world that doesn’t make sense and extra confusion is added. Weren’t they just in Europe? Isn’t their kingdom in Scandinavia? When did they get to North America? Does North America border Europe in the Disney Princess Universe? I am so lost…

I used to teach history and geography was a huge part of the curriculum, so these geographical jumps completely took me out of the picture. Let’s not forget that Elsa (Idina Menzel) keeps trying to ditch Anna (Kristen Bell). Didn’t they make up in the first movie? Why are you avoiding her throughout the second one?  I don’t get sibling rivalries because I’m an only child, but if you keep ditching me, I’m not going to chase after you, whether we’re related or not.

Frozen II is absolutely beautiful to watch and Disney animation has done it again…visually, but the story doesn’t make sense for the reasons I listed above. Bell is absolutely fantastic as a voice actress and thanks to the first Frozen and The Good Place, she has turned me into a big fan of hers. Menzel is a fantastic songwriter and I understand the desire to cash in on the success of the first animated smash hit, but this one just didn’t do it for me. The score below is solely based on the quality of animation that Disney continues to put forth, but as for a story, I am definitely not the demographic.

I grew up with enough people being racist towards me, I don’t need a cartoon to remind me, Hey, remember when Western Europeans weren’t nice to anyone? No? Well, here’s a reminder. Oh, this time, we’re making them feel guilty. I know very well how mean Western Europeans have been over the centuries (Sykes-Picot Agreement comes to mind for personal reasons). My family survived that cruelty. You can’t make up for the past, but you can definitely improve interpersonal relations between peoples to improve the future. However, all Frozen II does is make white people feel guilty about what X ancestors did to Y ancestors and the resolution is hollow.

Frozen II is out today on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Combo Packs.

I’m too tired to write one. It’s pretty, they songs are catchy, don’t over think it the way I did.
