With the new series already well under way in Cardiff, this being the fourth week of filming, it was only a matter of time before we saw an official image of Capaldi in his Time Lord togs. Every new actor that comes in to portray the Doctor gets the chance to put their own spin on things. Some have been flamboyant in capes and long scarves, others have been much less complicated in black leather or pinstripes.
Here is the first official image released by the BBC of Capaldi in the costume that will define his time as the Twelfth Time Lord. I was really hoping for something with a little more flair. Still, it’s better than the pictures floating around of him wearing pajamas. The look created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden features a simple dark blue Crombie coat with red lining (very Pertwee-esque), dark trousers, white shirt, and Doc Martens.
Capaldi has been quoted in the BBC press release saying, “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.” So, was this what you were expecting?
Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One has commented, “Peter Capaldi’s Doctor is officially recorded in history today with the unveiling of his new costume. It’s sharp, smart and stylish – The Twelfth Time Lord means business.”
Showrunner Steven Moffat has added, “New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over – Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!”
Doctor Who returns to the screen with series eight this summer. Are you getting excited yet?
