The First [48] – Dishonored 2 [PS4]

GameStop, Inc.

DishonoredFor gamers, their chance of finishing a game is cut in half if they don’t get engaged in the first 48 hours minutes. Well, maybe not exactly 48 minutes. Maybe 60, maybe 30, maybe 90. The fact is that the beginning of a game can make or break a game, especially in this day of Steam refunds. Today we look at the beginning of Dishonored 2.

When you first start the game, you are given the option to start the tutorial or just jump straight into the game. I chose to do the tutorial because it has been a while since I’ve played the first game. During the tutorial, you play as the new protagonist, Emily Kaldwin, as Corvo teaches you the basics of movement and fighting. Then you get into the game. The opening cutscene breifly covers the basic story of the first game and sets up this one. Fifteen years after the assassination of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin, Emily has been crowned Empress and Dunwall is rebounding from the rat plague. Dunwall now faces a new problem. Political enemies of Emily are being killed by someone dubbed “The Crown Killer” while making it seems like Corvo and Emily are behind them.  During the remembrance ceremony for Empress Jessamine, the Duke of Serkonos brings Emily a gift, the supposed older sister of Empress Jessamine, Delilah Kaldwin. Delilah takes over the crown and has Emily and Corvo arrested for the Crown Killer murders. During the following cutscene, Delilah steals Corvo’s powers. At this point you are able to choose between Corvo or Emily. Choosing Emily at this point, Corvo is turned to stone by Delilah and Emily is taken to her quarters. Once you get control of Emily, you are tasked with escaping and finding your Lieutenant. She tells you to find a ship at the dock that was looking for Corvo.

From here on, you will come across enemy NPC’s. you can either play stealthy, or go on a full murder spree. Like the first game, how you play determines the ending you get. After accidentally killing a target, I decided to play using combat. I don’t know if the target’s death makes a difference, but it was mentioned by a group of guards you will come across. This part gave me quite a bit of trouble because if you are spotted,  the guards keep coming at you until you kill them. Having made it to this checkpoint with half health probably had something to do with it. Eventually, you make it to the docks where the ship’s captain, Megan Foster, who is a friend of an old ally. She agrees to take Emily to Karnaca so she can investigate the murders. This section took me just about an hour, with all my dying.

Even after not playing the first game in years, this game looks and feels like the original. Graphically it isn’t the best looking, but it also isn’t the worst. If you are good with Fallout 4’s graphics, I’d say these are a bit better. As far as the voices go, I honestly can’t say I really care much here. Like the graphics, they are pretty middle of the road, as far as voice acting goes, but I’ve heard worse. Way worse. Emily, I would say, is the worst so far. She honestly sounds like she is narrating everything. It somewhat makes me want to start over and play as Corvo.

Gameplay wise it plays like the original. It is a first person shooter type game with the shoulder buttons on each side controlling the corresponding hand. Even after playing through the tutorial, I still had a difficult time being stealthy. There were times when I think I’m hidden and I am spotted or I try to take someone out non lethally and do nothing but block. I do kind of wish it had mapped block or the takedown button to another button, but it really just comes down to me not having played this type of game in a while and just needing to get good.

So far I really am enjoying the game. The story seems interesting and having two playable characters might give it a bit more replayability, depending on how much the story changes to accommodate each character.

The Verdict

The beginning of the game shows promise, but things have only just begun. Time will tell if the whole game lives up to expectations, but if the first game is any indication, it definitely should.
