The 10 Year Wait Is Finally Over! Introducing the Final Fantasy XV Universe

GameStop, Inc.

There’s only one word to describe how I feel about the Final Fantasy XV Uncovered event. That word is “EXCITEMENT.” This event single-handedly resurrected my faith in Square-Enix and the Final Fantasy franchise… Imagine if your favorite ice cream was taken away from you for 10 years and then your friend told you it’s on sale again; pretty exciting right? That’s exactly how I feel about Final Fantasy XV.

Uncovered Main Picture

The Final Fantasy XV Uncovered event was the way Square Enix chose to announce latest updates and the game’s official release date. This quickly turned into a high end production event with surprises being thrown at the audience left and right. As an avid fan of the franchise, along with every other chocobo rider in the room, we were all kept on our toes the entire show. Uncovered revealed 15 announcements on the Final Fantasy XV universe. Let’s get started!

The event kicked off with Hironobu Sakaguchi (the father of Final Fantasy) giving a speech on what they wanted to accomplish and the future of the franchise. The overarching goal is to take the Final Fantasy franchise back to its roots. He believed that Final Fantasy XV rediscovered its true challenging nature. This is something fans of the series have been waiting for. The latest Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy XIII, features a simple straightforward story that didn’t leave the user fully engaged and absorbed into the world… even though the graphics and main character were stunning. It was great to hear that the fans were acknowledged and the game was taken back to a world players could get lost in.

The second announcement, a new Final Fantasy XV trailer was unveiled which featured new stunning cut scene graphics and more game play footage. Third announcement showcased the official artwork of the game in a 3 dimensional display. While the fourth announcement unveiled the main theme song which is a cover of “Stand By Me” by Florence & The Machine. (Personally it seems like a good fit for the game.)

The fifth announcement was a long awaited in-depth game play trailer. It showcased a vast open world style of game play, exactly what everyone wanted in Final Fantasy XIII but never got. Imagine being able to choose from riding a chocobo or a convertible car that plays classical Final Fantasy music on the radio? The game features Kingdom Hearts’ combat system, but with more fluidity and real time action making it much more dynamic. Another great addition is that the computer generated monsters and bosses use a Smart AI system, allowing the monsters to flee or engage at their own will.

The sixth announcement showcased another trailer that featured different world maps and the many different environments of the game. Just from watching the trailer, it feels like there is so much more to exploring to than the previous game. They have all types of locations ranging from huge desert landscapes, massive cities and giant plains. (One of those games where you would spend more time in that world than in the real one haha.)

Players knew what the game play and the environment looked like due to some trailers being released and little snippets prior to the event. But Square Enix had several surprises up their sleeves. The seventh announcement was an original 5 part anime series “Brotherhood” that features the back story of Noctis and his 3 companions, the main protagonists of the story. This was by far one of the most interesting addition to the Final Fantasy XV universe. Releasing an anime series would also spread awareness of the game to the anime community (hard to believe that they wouldn’t know about Final Fantasy already though…).

As if the 5 part anime series wasn’t enough, the eighth announcement debuted a full length CG movie “Kingsglaive” which featured King Reigis, Luna, and Nyx. Unlike “Brotherhood,” “Kingsglaive” takes place during the same time as the game and the stories intertwine with each other. The movie releases July 9th for Japan, unfortunately there are no release dates for North America as of yet! (damn it). If “Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children” was released years after Final Fantasy VII and still had a huge impact on the community, adding “Kingsglaive” as a prequel to playing the game was genius.

The ninth announcement showcased a custom built Audi R8 concept car that was seen in the “Kingsglaive” trailer. They created one production model that isn’t for sale… (What a tease.)

Kingsglaive

With every CG movie, voice actors can either make or break the movie. The 10th announcement revealed who would be voicing the main characters in “Kingsglaive.” Lena Headey (Cersi Lannister, Game of Thrones), and Aaron Paul (Jesse, Breaking Bad). Along with Sean Bean (Ned Stark, Game of Thrones), but Bean wasn’t able to attend the event. Unless you haven’t watched TV in a while, you know these are some of the biggest stars from some of the biggest shows. Surely everyone is excited for what they can bring to “Kingsglaive” (even though I hate watching dubbed anything, but maybe this will be an exception haha.)

But wait! There’s more!

The 11th announcement unveiled the popular time sinks in the Final Fantasy world, the mini games! “Justice Monsters V” was announced as the official mini game for Final Fantasy XV. “Justice Monsters V” is a pinball RPG mini game which is almost available on your mobile device!

The twelfth announcement was another full length playable demo, “Platinum Demo” which features young Noctis and a carbuncle that gives the user a sneak peek at the combat controls and boss fight mechanics from the main game.

As the night came to a close, the crowd was already anxious to play the new demos and watch some anime. The thirteenth announcement featured the Deluxe and Ultimate Collector’s edition of the game! All 30,000 units available worldwide for the Ultimate Collector’s edition were sold out immediately after the event! (well what do you expect after waiting 10 years for the game haha.)

The fourteenth announcement was Hajime Tabata (Director of Final Fantasy XV) giving the official release date of the game.

Final Fantasy XV official release date: SEPTEMBER 30, 2016!

Release Date

Boom! While the whole room was full of excitement and applause, they played another never before seen trailer to end the night. The final 2 seconds of the trailer featured the car you drive transforming into a flying car and taking off into the sunset. A flying car?! Yup.

If you’ve read this far into the article and somewhat enjoyed most of the fangirling, (I applaud you just like how I applauded at the event haha.) All these announcements were packed into a little over an hour event and it was a non-stop dopamine rush for an avid fan like myself. Without having played the official game yet, it feels as if the directors and the team have stepped up in taking back the franchise to its roots. They did an excellent job laying out a pathway for players to start being involved before the release of the game. With announcements like “Brotherhood”, “Kingsglaive”, “Justice Monsters V”, and the “Platinum Demo”, all set to be released before the official game. As time goes on, you never know what Square Enix might announce next!

Honestly, I believed that the franchise was heading down a path that they couldn’t come back from, but they know how to pull players back in! Final Fantasy XV is going to make or break the franchise. Patiently waiting for September 30th is going to be a definite struggle. But as a longtime fan of the franchise or a newcomer introduced to the series, be ready for one of the best RPG experiences of the past decade!
