What was your first Cosplay Experience?
I wore an old brown suit ( that looked nothing like David Tennant’s) that a friend asked me to wear to the parade at Dragon Con. This is before I had ever watched Doctor Who and my only instructions were wave this thing around (a sonic screwdriver). As soon as I got into the elevator one of the people inside asked me if I “was a ten” I replied “I don’t know” then they asked if I was “a Tennant” to which I replied “I’m not sure”. It was an amazing experience though and tons of people asked to get pictures with me, so after that I was hooked. Oh and I have also watched the entire run of Doctor Who now and am a self-proclaimed “Whovian”
How long have you been Cosplaying?
Will be 3 years next Dragon Con
What is your favorite cosplay you have worn/created?
I created Loki before the whole cosplay thing as a very elaborate Halloween costume. I loved Loki before he was cool and this was at the time the first Thor movie came out so I only had two pictures I had found on the internet to go by. I had no idea of what I was doing and I’m very stubborn about wanting to try my own way before looking at tutorials so the costume was made of metal and the helmet is bondo and weighs about 6 pounds haha. It is extremely uncomfortable to say the least but it will always have a soft spot in my heart as the first costume I ever created from the ground up and I love the cape. I would wear a cape daily if I could get away with it.
If you had unlimited resources, what Cosplay would you create?
I think I would do an old school Soundwave transformer with working controls and a killer soundtrack that people could come up and use the buttons on my chest to select songs. Of course I would also need some dancing lessons so I could bust out some killer robot moves.
What advice would you offer others trying to break into Cosplay?
Just try it. I have so many people tell me they “can’t do” something, sometimes it is “I can’t sew” or “I can’t craft foam” or “I just don’t know where to start”. Just start at something. None of us started out knowing how to do everything. I’ve humbled myself and watch tutorials and sometimes I still try crazy stuff that just doesn’t work. But if you don’t even give it a try you will never get anywhere. Also keep the emphasis on having fun and realize people don’t expect perfection on everything you do.
