What was your first Cosplay Experience?

The first costume I ever created with my own hands was from the musical Cats. I hand painted a mock neck unitard and sewed a rug yarn wig from scratch for the character Rumpleteaser. I was 16. My first convention experience was actually Sakura Con several years later, dressed as Chii from Chobits. I met some great friends, took lots of pictures, and was instantly hooked right in. I never looked back.

How long have you been Cosplaying?

Over 12 years now. Of course, we didn’t call it “cosplay” back then. I was just a costumer. I started out by buying pieces and modifying them into a costume, and I have leveled up to “drape fabric and sew it together without a pattern”. It is so liberating to make something beautiful out of a sheet of fabric and some thread. It is my first and foremost passion in life!

What is your favorite cosplay you have worn/created?

Darth Talon. To combat time constraints and take into account my own personal modesty, I created a body suit with her tattoos rather than try to cover my body in red makeup by myself. Her Lekku are exceedingly heavy and give me a raging headache within a few hours, but it is worth it for the effect they give. I designed them to have lifelike movement and be able to wrap around my neck/shoulders like she is often portrayed in statues.

Though Harley Quinn is probably my favorite to WEAR at conventions. I love slipping into her spacey crazy persona and skipping around a busy con while humming random tunes.

If you had unlimited resources, what Cosplay would you create?

ALL OF THE COSPLAYS. Seriously though, how could I choose just one? I suppose I would dabble in armor making with Worbla. I haven’t had the finances to try it out yet. Would LOVE to make the armored Wonder Woman, or a really cool Priest or Demon Hunter from Diablo 3.

What advice would you offer others trying to break into Cosplay?

Get involved with making your own costume. There is nothing quite like making a costume from scratch and having people Ooh and Aah over your work (regardless of what level of craftsmanship you are at). With every cosplay and every piece you design and make yourself, you level up. Start small, and learn new skills until you max out your experience. And HAVE FUN! Believe in yourself. Never let someone else keep you from loving the weird quirky things that make you YOU.
