What was your first Cosplay Experience?

San Diego Comic-Con 2009 – My first time wearing the (dreaded? revered?) Gold Bikini Leia. I was very excited to join in the big Slave Leia group photo. It was absolute chaos! The show floor is crowded already, so when you get that many Leia’s together, and spectators exponentially grow. At one point, Seth Green appeared and took a picture with us! After that group photo, artist Matt Busch asked several of us to shoot a “How To Draw Slave Leia” video and I jumped at the chance. I mean, how often can you have a cat fight with 10 slave Leia’s? You can view that episode here: http://youtu.be/vAA87JTNc5U
Well, I was hooked on cosplay from then on. I’ve actually found that cosplay helps keep me in shape! Knowing that I want to wear a particular outfit at a particular time helps motivate me to exercise and eat right.
How long have you been Cosplaying?
I’ve been cosplaying since 2009, but really, all of my life. When I was about 5 my parents gave me Superman pajamas and I was hooked. I never took them off!
What is your favorite cosplay you have worn/created?
JediTink!! When signing up for Twitter I had to pick a Twitter name, and settled on JediTink. Back in 2012, Star Wars Celebration VI was looming. I was determined to enter the costume contest, and what better costume to enter than JediTink! This meant I had to create this character and this costume from scratch. I sketched out my vision. Now…to sew! But, I didn’t know how to sew… Well, I learned how JUST so I could create JediTink. If you’d like to read in more detail how I created JediTink from Concept to Costume, view my blog post about it here: http://www.sarahwoloski.com/blog/jeditink-from-concept-to-costume/
As for the debut of JediTink at Star Wars Celebration VI, well, she was a hit!  Anthony Daniels was scared of the “ew…fairy”, but I got a pic with him! I felt like a movie star when several attendees and photographers gathered around to take pictures that first morning. I entered the Star Wars Celebration Costume Contest for the first time and got 2 awards! I got Second Place in my category (Jedi) AND won an honorary award: “Most Sparkly Jedi.” It doesn’t get any better than that!
Now, JediTink has become the mascot of our Star Wars / Disney podcast, Skywalking Through Neverland. http://skywalkingthroughneverland.com I incorporated her into the Logo and dress up as JediTink to any conventions we attend so people can find us.
Next up…a JediTink running costume for the runDisney Tinkerbell Half Marathon in May 2015.
If you had unlimited resources, what Cosplay would you create?
I would create a whole line of Star Wars and Disney mash-up characters for all my friends. A Caption Hook Sith Lord, a Jedi Pan, Elsa Fett…
What advice would you offer others trying to break into Cosplay?
Make a costume that suits your personality and body type. Even though I would love to be Maleficent, I never got around to it because I don’t feel I have the necessary body presence. Maleficent is tall and imposing. I am short, curvy and blond. That is why Tinkerbell and JediTink totally work for me, but Maleficent (sadly) never will.
If you find yourself stuck, don’t be afraid to reach out at conventions or on social media to get help. There are so many friendly cosplayers out there.
