FAITH #4

Story by: Jody Houser

Art by: Francis Portela

Release date: April 27th

Faith #4 is the newest blonde bombshell to hit the shelves; it tells the story of Faith Herbert, a late bloomer in her power development she now dons the hero moniker “Zephyr!” She has the power of flight and psionics, and now she’s involved in a plot to stop a cult in Southern California from achieving its evil ambitions.

Jody Houser’s writing style in Faith is relatable, endearing, memorable, and most of all fun. The way she has Faith narrate the story had put me in the story with her. The dialogues feels down to earth and witty. I get the sense that Faith and her friends could’ve been my friends out saving the world. Faith #4 doesn’t have to rely solely on Faith Herbert to carry the story, even though she could. Her merry troop of friends provide a cast of characters; that add not only to Faith, but to the story at hand. I have to admit that I went into this book with some held reservations. I heard so many rumblings on the internet about how good Faith is, that I needed to read this. Then serendipitously I was graced with issue 4. Being offered to review it, I turned on my objective reviewer switch, after turning off the salty comic veteran button. I’m happy that I did, now I can happily recommend a new IP that even the most seasoned comic reader will enjoy.

Francis Portela only compliments an already great story. I think it’s easier to describe bad art, Francis’ isn’t bad though, so that leaves me to describe something that’s pleasing to the eye. Now I’ve droned on and on about eyes in previous reviews (see my review on Dark Souls: The Breath of Andolus). There is a scene where Faith is apprehended by a certain foe and the expression on her face is absolutely gripping! Portela draws these whirlpools that sink the reader into the pages. I couldn’t pull myself from looking away; his style has a unique beat to it that makes it stand out from others. To put to words the exact technical renderings that he employs is beyond my knowledge base, and I’ll spare you hours of Wikipedia research that will bore you to tears. Without being too detailed, he gives his pages a sense of realism. Accompanied with the realism, Francis has a way with movement. The action sequences feel tense due to Portela’s attention to movement.

I recommend this book to you and to your non-comic reader friends. Lend your friends this comic after your done, or do Valiant a favor and buy two: one for you and your buddy. Faith #4 is great place to start with Valiant Entertainment. Are you getting bored with a title from your pull list? Switch it out with this one. It could also be that gateway drug for your non comic reading friends. Before I bid my farewells, I’d like to mention one more thing here; you really don’t need to read the other three prior issues to Faith #4Faith #4 is a fantastic entry point, so don’t be scared to pick this book up even though it’s already four issues into its run.
