faith_003_002Faith #3: Contra Conventions

Story By: Jody Houser

Art By: Pere Perez and Marguerite Sauvage

Release Date: 09/14/2014

Faith has been dealing with the consequences of being a super hero. Having powers is one thing, but to use them to help people is another. Faith #3 is a great contemporary example, of what it might be like to try and fight crime, in today’s world. Having your friends and coworkers figure out your identity could be dangerous. So Faith isn’t the only one with a major responsibility, but the holders of her identity have a big one as well. They have to keep, or better yet guard Faith’s identity as Zephyr. However her friends don’t have powers, Faith does.

I have only been to one convention, and it was held in a high school cafeteria in 1997. Friends of mine go quite a bit. It’s fun to hear the turmoil and joy they experience while they’re there. Whether its the long lines, celebrity sightings, or body odor from sweaty patrons. It’s totally worth it from what I hear, and I totally plan on going. Faith #3, has our heroine cosplaying as herself at a convention. Jody Houser writes a unique scenario that I don’t believe I’ve read before.

Throughout the story are helpful tips about convention etiquette, they’re written from Faith’s perspective, but I can’t help but feel that Houser was writing from experience. Page to page the story yanks you into the comic. It’s a lite plot but super fun, and kept me interested. Houser’s down to earth style of writing really lends itself to Faith. Plus the twist at the end really has me yearning for issue 4. Also I love the villain Houser cooked up.

Faith #3 is awesome due to the creative forces behind the title. The two artist in these books Pere Perez and Marguerite Sauvage are dynamite, pure and simple. You have two styles showcased in the book and they both work great together. Faith’s expressions are akin to Lucille Ball in I Love Lucy. Jody’s writing by itself is great, but coupled with Perez and Sauvage, it comes to life.

Overall Faith is one the funnest books on the shelves. I personally dig this book due to the true to life personalities in the book. The writing and art are text book examples of comic book creation.
