How do you make a sequel that didn’t really need one but still get one that surpasses the original? You get Escape Plan: The Extractors starring action film legend and franchise making king, Sylvester Stallone!
Where as in the original Escape Plan film we Ray Breslin (Stallone) team up with former California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger as the escape a maximum security prison as Breslin is imprisoned in a perverted cat-and-mouse game by the warden.
In this sequel, Breslin — who clearly made it out alive in the first film, is hired to break out the daughter of a Hong Kong tech mogul from a Latvian maximum security prion with the help of his crew Trent DeRosa (former WWE World Champion turned actor, Dave Bautista) and Hush (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson). Unfortunately, things don’t go as smoothly as they had hoped as Breslin’s girlfriend, Abigail (Jaime King) is kidnapped. Now, these heroes must do what they can to save the two women and several hostages from a fate worse than death.
As you can see in the clip above, Stallone still knows how to create suspense and some of the best western action scenes even when using eastern arts. Jin Zhang, who has been seen in such films as The Grandmaster and Pacific Rim: Uprising is great as always. Bautista has come along way from his in-ring days and as a character actor, developed quite nicely. He’s in a long line, of post-Attitude Era and New Era stars that have transitioned to be the screen all thanks to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson opening the doors for him and John Cena, Adam “Edge” Copeland and Jay “Christian” Reso.
In fact, even 50 Cent has stepped up his acting game thanks to the series Powers and the people forget that Ice-T was the first rapper to have a scene in a film thanks to the Breakin’ franchise. I only wish the last Expendables movie was as exciting as Escape Plan: The Extractors.
Escape Plan: The Extractors comes to Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD Combo Pack on Tuesday, July 2, 2019. In the meantime, keep rewatching the clip above of Zhang beating the hell out of everyone in that board room.
Escape Plan: The Extractors is everything Expendables 3 should have been. This East-meet-West in Eastern Europe action flick will make you long for the 1980s when these flicks dominated the theaters. It’s a much needed Alpha Flick in a world full of passive-aggressive whining.
