ECCC Weekend in Review

GameStop, Inc.

by Kelly Zolnoski

ECCCThe Emerald City Comic Con kicked off today and let me tell you: This time they handled the crowds much better. Learning from the disaster of last year the organizers mailed out the badges so there were fewer, shorter lines to stand in to get into the con.

It seems to me that more and more people are getting into cosplay. Last year there were some fantastic cosplays but the majority of con goers were not cosplayers. Probably percentage-wise the same is true this year but even people who aren’t going all in on cosplay seem to be getting into the spirit by wearing their favorite super hero, or super heroine T-shirt.

Frozen has been a catalyst it seems for a lot of Disney princess cosplay. I saw the best Snow White I’ve ever seen, in fact the first two I’ve seen at a con were here. There was also a rocking Cinderella and two delightful steampunk Tinkerbelles. I’ve also seen more My Little Pony cosplay. Some of those costumes are just adorable. This year I spotted a spectacular Colossus of the X-Men while waiting in line to here Nichelle Nichols speak.

Speaking of Nichelle Nichols, she is as charming, gracious and beautiful in person as she ever was on the big screen. I had the distinct pleasure of getting an autograph from her and she was just delightful. She found a few words to say to everyone who approached her table, even if it was just to say, “Hello.”

Nichelle Nichols had a Q&A panel where she talked about being on Star Trek and of course told the story about meeting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The way she told the story was significantly different than what I remember reading about. Of course she has such an exquisite way of expressing herself, her facial expressions are quite charming.

Some well informed soul asked her, since she’d met Neil deGrasse Tyson previously, if she would do a guest appearance on Cosmos if asked. Of course she would! Then she told us about meeting Neil deGrasse Tyson. Oh my goodness she has so much personality and she is so generous with herself. She said she was told that a young astrophysicist wanted to meet her. She thought to make an appointment but was told he wanted to meet her right then. Well she was nervous but what could she do? “Well,” She said, “I looked up and here comes this gorgeous man. And I’m thinking—alright!”

She’s just a lovely person in every way, beautiful inside and out. It’s always so nice when someone you like, who has played a role you really enjoyed on a television show you enjoyed, turns out to be just a wonderful human being. I know it shouldn’t matter but for some reason, to me, it does.

Ron Perlman is also at the #ECCC but I got his autograph at the Rose City Comic Con. He’s quite charming also. In fact he gets into the character of whatever photograph you choose to have autographed when you give it to him. If I hadn’t already gotten his autograph I totally would here.

The only thing that I thought was lacking was Godzilla. With a major motion picture due out in two months I had hoped for a lot more Godzilla merchandising. Aside from one or two older figurines and a Godzilla bank there really wasn’t anything to be found. I did find the rare 18” Gipsy Danger with LED lights. So I was somewhat mollified.

I would have to say that the first day of the #ECCC has been a rousing success. I’m looking forward to the next two days.
