Why is the Aurora Borealis appearing in the skies above New York City, and what does it have to do with crowds of unusually violent citizens? With each instance becoming ever larger, will Doc Savage and his men ever sort it out in time, or will the citizens remain violent animals forever?

Chris Roberson delivers another pulp classic character to our modern comic store shelves, and does an excellent job of it! This story, while being an exciting thriller in its own right, also serves as a great introduction for those unfamiliar with The Man Of Bronze, but never feels weighted down by explaining his back story. He masterfully tells a done-in-one story, easily enjoyed on its own, yet leaves the door open at the end for continuing adventures.

Doc Savage 01 CoverThe pacing and dialog we’ve come to expect from Roberson’s scripts are here, as well as some humor, giving this story an injection of fun to go with the thrills. Roberson really knows how to write these pulp characters, and instantly nails their voices, as if he’s been writing them for years. Though the stakes are high, Roberson uses the banter between the five main protagonists to keep things light and fun, and they really do seem like a bunch of old war buddies.

I’ve never heard of artist Bilquis Evely before, but after this issue I think we’ll be hearing a lot from him. With a finely honed, elegant, classic comic strip art style, he really nails the look for this series, and I hope he remains for a long while. His panels are so full of detailed backgrounds that you feel this world is truly inhabited by these characters. He understands, and uses quite well, body language, as well as telling the story through the facial expressions of the players. Daniela Miwa’s colors are perfectly suited to Evely’s ink lines, using soft tones, and an almost painterly style, complementing the elegance of the artist’s style.

Dynamite and Roberson have done it again with Doc Savage, keeping the old school feel of the characters, but giving the storytelling a more modern flair. It is sure to please fans of the character, but there is plenty in its 22 pages to create new fans as well.
