What do you do when your main character/damsel in distress is on board a beautiful steampunk airship with all the luxuries and amenities? If you’re Bill Willingham, then you stop the ship on Doctor Moreau’s Island and take on cargo.
It’s not really spoiling anything to say that the good doctor’s beast men end up fighting with everyone, is it? Because, of course they would! And, of course, Magda Spadarosa has not left her pursuers behind because mysterious dark organizations with nefarious purposes are never easy to elude. The result is a running battle in the corridors of a truly splendid ship, plenty of chances for Captain Victory to shine, the introduction of a steampunk cyborg, and a fast-paced, enjoyable plot. Willingham also reveals a few tantalizing tidbits more about Black Mass, the plot against Magda, and the secrets behind the hunt.
Sergio Fernandez Davila continues to embrace the possibilities of a steampunk comic book world, detailing the ship, costumes, and crew with verve. The details on the different dress styles are much appreciated. Wes Hartman’s colors are bright and clear. This is a dangerous time for Magda Spadarosa, but a beautiful world for us to visit.
Overall, Legenderry is proving an entirely satisfying adventure, and I look forward to the next installment.
