Dragon*Con 2015 in Review: From The Con Floor

GameStop, Inc.

I don’t think this can be said nearly enough, Dragon*Con is different than every other convention I have attended. For starters I walked close to 8 miles on the first day alone. Where other Cons are in one designated area which is undoubtedly large Dragon*Con is spread out over 5 different hotels in downtown Atlanta. There’s the Hyatt Regency, Marriott Marquis, Westin, Sheraton, and finally the Hilton.

Downtown Atlanta isn’t very large, especially when you come from a huge city like Chicago (like myself), but when every street is packed with thousands of people, every block takes an hour to traverse. While that may seem like a negative, believe me when I say it isn’t. Every step you take is rich with cosplay or the random celebrity being ushered to their next appointment. While waiting in line to visit the vendors, B.J Britt (A.K.A Trip from Agents of Shield) was being whisked away. While looking at the menu of a diner multiple Battlestar Galactica actors were walking out. That is Dragon*Con in a nutshell, anything can happen at any time; like the million Deadpool march that randomly broke out and consumed an entire hotel lobby.

The Cosplay was varied and plentiful, videogames, movies, books and television were all covered and it was awesome. There was plenty of Destiny, Star Wars, LOTR, Marvel, DC on hand, and everything in between. My personal favorite was a spot on “Silent Bob” cosplayer, and to my surprise there were plenty of “Silent Bob” cosplayers out there.

Dragon*Con wasn’t just about the cosplay though. There were vendors to be seen and I would venture a guess that over 4 miles of my walking took place inside the vendor’s station. The station for Dragon*Con is so large that one floor can’t contain it, so there are two. Even with there being two floors of vendors the place was absolutely packed. With everything from Star Wars, comic books, video games, and literature, if there was something that you wanted or simply wanted to inquire about odds are if you walked the two floors you would end up finding it, or you would stumble into it as you got lost trying to find your way out.

Unfortunately, I did not have time to attend any panels, but the panels were just as present as the cosplay was. Which is to say there was a panel everywhere you turned. Next year I will most definitely attend a few and get a more enriched Dragon*Con experience. As it stands though this was definitely the most fun I have had at any Con. I did not get to attend everything that I wanted to, but just walking the street and interacting with the people is a great time on its own. If you can make your way down to Atlanta next year you should definitely do so, don’t pass it up, you won’t be disappointed believe me! If you do make it down I’ll be in attendance repping FanboyNation. See you next year (probably not there’s close to 30,000 people in Downtown Atlanta that week so the chances that we run into each other are slim at best, but you get what I’m saying)!
