‘Cabin Boy’ is the Centerpiece of Alamo Drafthouse’s Off-Centered Film Fest

GameStop, Inc.

Regrettably, I’ve never stepped foot into an Alamo Drafthouse theater. Luckily, they’re planning to open one in Los Angeles in the very near future. As they’re doing with the Off-Centered Film Fest, the folks at Drafthouse are providing programming that makes cinephiles around the world drool with envy. For the OCFF, Alamo Drafthouse and Dogfish Brewery have come up with the theme of “Yacht Rockin’”, with the two companies providing support for a worthy cause, The National Wildlife Foundation.

Damn, though, what a wonderful combination of beer and cinema they have in store – also, if anyone wants to fly me out and put me up in Austin, I’m totally cool with that. For the opening night, the movie-riffers Master Pancake will take on the biggest of ‘em all, Titanic.

Look at all the beers they’ll have on hand to accompany the eviscerating of James Cameron’s epic (from the press release):

OCFF kicks off on Thursday, April 24, with “Master Pancake Presents: TITANIC Rolling Roadshow Beer Party.” Not only will this special outdoor screening feature Austin’s beloved movie mockers taking the wind out of the mega-blockbuster’s sails, but also more than a dozen Texas craft brewers will be on hand offering up selections of rare and special beers. This year’s featured breweries include: Karbach, Circle, Save The World, (512), Real Ale, Austin Beerworks, Uncle Billy’s Brew & Que, Oasis, Independence, Strange Land, Jester King, Live Oak, and Hops & Grain.

“John Erler and his Master Pancake team have been a big part of the Alamo Drafthouse family since nearly the very beginning,” says Alamo Drafthouse CEO and Founder Tim League. ” I am really excited to bring one of their finest shows ever into what has become one of my all time favorite annual events, the Off-Centered Film Festival.”

And while it’s certainly awesome that they’re also presenting Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Joon-ho Bong’s The Host, and the Marx BrothersMonkey Business, the crown jewel of the OCFF is a 35mm screening of Cabin Boy. The bizarre comedy starring Chris Elliot is the embodiment of cult comedy. Rejected by critics and audiences simultaneously, Cabin Boy, as these films do, slowly built up a devoted cult audience and will finally have its coronation ceremony with star Chris Elliot and director Adam Resnick in person. As a fan of Cabin Boy, I’m incredibly jealous of those who can attend.

With programming like that, it’s not hard to see why the Alamo Drafthouse is rapidly expanding or why cinema lovers flock to their theaters. I want that L.A. location to open up already and I want Cabin Boy in 35mm.
