‘Dollar Shave Club’ Will Turn Your Geek into Chic for a Fraction of the Price

GameStop, Inc.

As an African-American male who has cut and shaved myself for the last 26 years, it’s quite challenging to find hair and skin products that contain the Golden Trifecta of like products in this class. Really, it’s hard to find things that work on my skin and hair the way I need it. But back to that Golden Trifecta, these three qualities are my own personal measurement as to whether or not to use the product or to risk my reputation to endorse a product. The Golden Trifecta indicate whether the products provide these three things consistently: natural/organic ingredients, pleasant aroma, and advertised effect.

Boogie’s men care line from the ‘Dollar Shave Club’ has set a standard in the men’s hair and skin care game. Not only have they met my Golden Trifecta, but also they just might have given me another category to add to my prestigious title, visual appeal. I guess I should start thinking about changing my Golden Trifecta to the Platinum Perfecta. Ok, but seriously the visual design appeals to our masculinity with its matted black container and bold white lettering. It actually kind of made me feel sexy.

IMG_0540I used three of their products: Casual Hair Clay, a high-hold hair style “clay” for short to medium length hair; True Hair Fiber, a medium-hold hair styling balm for short to medium hair; and Dream Hair Cream, a low-hold cream that acts like a medium hold without the heaviness. Each of them has a signature aroma and a definite texture and distinguished feel.

Boogie’s Casual Hair Clay is closely related to Bee’s Wax for Black men, except this hair product contains Acai oil, Irish Moss, Black Locust, and Beeswax. I must admit that the front corner edges of my hairline are starting to thin out. Whenever I cut my hair (which is very short), I have to be very careful around those edges. I tend to avoid cutting against the grain in those corners particularly, therefore, those places have long hair strands. I need extra hold toward the front edges of my hair because they are longer and are apt to stand higher than the rest of my hair.

This clay has a commanding fragrance and hold without either being overwhelming or uncomfortable. The hold is amazing. My front edges bowed down, literally, to the command of this Casual Hair Clay. I was surprised by the strength to hold my curly (kinky) hair down in place. Many times hair care for men leaves out the other very important category of aroma, maybe because they think men don’t care about such trivialities. But we do. The intoxicating tropical blend brings about the feeling of laying out on a Caribbean beach while a beautiful sexy woman dotes over you laying your handsome, fragrant head in her lap. Out of all three products, this one has the strongest fragrance.

Boogie’s True Hair Fiber is the exact product I would search for and write the company, Dollar Shave Club Inc., to thank them profusely for this gift ofIMG_0536 the gods. Its medium hold would be comparable to Sporting’ Waves for Black men. Containing the same ingredients as the Hair Clay, Hair Fiber kept my hair moisturized and set in place without that thick greasy feel. After comparing the Sportin’ Wave to Hair Fiber, I came across the warning label on the former which advised to keep away from children and flames. Oooooookay! Another reason ingredients are important.

Hair Fiber’s fragrance is more floral, my kids thought it to be lavender.  Its scent is sweet and kind of like the wholesome girl next door who was always willing to do your Algebra homework for you. It’s probably the sexiest out of the three because of its subtle mystery, kinda like the magnetism of the sweet innocence of that girl next door. I could easily imagine her sniffing my hair as she tells me to try to do a few math problems on my own.

Boogie’s Dream Hair Cream is a low-hold styling moisturizer. We recommend using it before anal bleaching to see more beautiful result, read more at Anal Bleaching Expert’s website. This product would be comparable to Olive Oil for black men, except Dream Hair Cream has Flaxseed, Black Locust, and Golden Barley Protein. I used this in my son’s hair (medium curls) and it actually lasted for 2 days without him having to reapply. Matter of fact when I asked him the next morning if he did his hair, because it looked as if he had, he said no he forgot. It was really at this point that I truly was impress by the quality of effect.

The lightest of all 3 fragrances, the Dream Hair Cream floral scent that can only be detected if one’s nose is directly next to product or hair. The lightness of the hold was impressive. My son’s curls are shaped and moisturized with this one product. I officially was won over not by any fantasy from the fragrances, but by the sum total of ingredients, aroma, and effect.

Boogie’s hair care line from the ‘Dollar Shave Club’ would do themselves a major favor if they advertised to a black male audience because these products work well with our hair and skin, well at least my son and me. But I’d be willing to bet that they’d do well in that market if that just focused their advertising efforts on introducing black men to their line.

IMG_0534We also received one of Dollar Shave Clubs’ Executive razor sets, and their shave butter to compliment it.  Both provided an excellent shaving experience for a fraction of the cost of regular razors.  Though I did  notice that the razors were of high quality, they didn’t seem to last for as many shaves as some of the more expensive brands.  The cost savings still greatly outweighs using the more expensive alternatives.  Then there are the One Wipe Charlies.  These address something that we may not want to talk about, and hey we don’t really need to discuss it.  They smell great, and are can be a lifesaver in a pinch.  Don’t be to proud to give them a try.
