Doctor Who Prisoners of Time 8 coverPrisoners of Time #8 begins with The 8th Doctor returning to visit Dr. Grace Holloway back in San Francisco. It has only been two months since their adventure to stop the Master from taking over the TARDIS entirely and accidentally sucking the Earth through the Eye of Harmony. While Grace is keeping her stance on not traveling with the Doctor full time, he does convince her to go on “one little trip.” Of course, one little trip usually means chaos. The new experiences are too much for Grace and the Doctor lands on a planet that looks like Earth, but is certainly not. Arriving in what appears to be the land of feudal farmers, the two discover that those living on the land suffer  “the ascension”; regular removal of young teenagers in the village from which they don’t return. The “Overseers,” an alien race that has until now seemingly done the job of watching over the villagers, takes the teenage son of the family the Doctor and Grace visit. The two go to the city center and uncover the nearly organ harvesting activities of the Overseers. The adventure does not end there. The Doctor is yet again accosted by the strange person that has kidnapped companions in every issue thus far. Even though the Doctor expects him this time, he still watches as Grace is carried away.

Much of the dialogue in the initial stretch of the comic is homage to the 1996 film that failed to restart the Doctor Who franchise (at that time anyhow). Grace is driving in her car listening to a report about the atomic clock that has finally been repaired and it’s mysterious failings on New Years Eve. For fans who have seen the movie, this is easily explained because the Doctor did some quick work to remove a portion of this atomic clock to save the TARDIS. Scott and David Tipton write this sort of thing very well. The two are adept at taking references to occurrences in the television show (or TV movie in this case) to pepper their issues of Prisoners of Time with just an extra touch for die-hard fans. To the uninitiated, it is merely background chatter.

The art in this issue did not appear as strong as previous issues in the series. While Roger Langridge merely makes the 8th Doctor a caricature of himself, Grace looks like a man for much of the issue. Her face seems out of proportion and generally more boxy than necessary. The threat of the Overseers seems lessened as they appear more cartoonish than scary. Charlie Kirchoff keeps the colors light and airy for Grace and the Doctor, much like the Highlanger-esque quality of the 1996 film.

With only three versions of the Doctor left, the reader is left to wonder if he will be able to solve the mystery of the time traveling kidnapper and save his fifty years worth of companions in the process.
