‘Disney’s Beauty and the Beast‘ at the Rose Center Theater is a smaller production that feels like a Broadway touring company!
I had the incredible privilege of attending ‘Disney’s Beauty and the Beast‘ at the Rose Center Theater for its opening night performance, and I must say, it was a theatrical experience that exceeded all expectations. Nestled on the Coastline Community College campus in Westminster, CA, just across from the courthouse, this small theater managed to transport me into a world of magic and wonder that rivaled its Broadway touring company.
The excitement began even before the curtain rose, as the ‘Beauty and the Beast‘ Youth Ensemble set the stage with their lively rendition of ‘Welcome to the Carnival.’ Their energy and talent immediately drew us into the festive atmosphere, setting the perfect tone for the evening ahead.
Once the main performance began, I was completely swept away by the power of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s timeless music, as it was clear that this production was something special. The melodies resonated with the same depth and emotion as the original 1991 Disney animated classic, evoking a wave of nostalgia while also injecting fresh vitality into the beloved tale.
The cast was nothing short of extraordinary! Olivia Aniceto’s portrayal of Belle was filled with the grace and spirit that Paige O’Hara first brought to life in 1991, capturing the essence of the beloved character effortlessly. Chris Caputo brought a poignant and powerful presence to the role of the Beast being a near sound-a-like for Robby Benson, while Garrett Brown’s LeFou provided a delightful comedic relief, outshining Josh Gad’s performance in the live-action remake, that had the audience in stitches. Matthew Ollson’s Gaston was charismatic and larger than life, commanding the stage with every appearance. Ollson and Brown shone brightest in the tavern scene that proved this ensemble was cast perfectly.
The supporting cast, including Bernadette Colette Peters as Babette and Cliff Senior as Cogsworth, added layers of humor and depth to the production, making each scene come alive with their impeccable performances and chemistry.
What truly amazed me was the production quality, minus a couple of audio glitches that will easily be fixed through the show’s run. The costumes were exquisite, capturing the essence of each character with intricate detail and authenticity.
Under the masterful direction of Tim Nelson, Managing Artistic Director, the Rose Center Theater gave a marvelous rendition of this iconic narrative with passion and precision. Every aspect of the production was executed with utmost care and dedication, transforming a small 400 seat theater into a stage worthy of Broadway acclaim.
If you have the opportunity to experience this extraordinary production at the Rose Center Theater, do not miss it. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the animated classic or discovering Beauty and the Beast for the first time, this show promises an evening filled with magic, music, and storytelling that will leave you spellbound and wanting more.
