Disney/Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ Mixes Molecules With No Chemistry

GameStop, Inc.

Disney/Pixar’s ‘Elemental‘ is a chemically unbalanced feature focusing too much on race and not enough on romance, hitting theaters on Friday, June 16, 2023.

I had to sit on this for a few days before writing my review, but here goes:

Disney/Pixar’s ‘Elemental‘ follows the decline in quality since the departure of shamed studio head, John Lasseter. Since 2010, Disney Pixar has given us such forgettable films like, ‘The Good Dinosaur‘, ‘Soul‘, ‘Onward‘, ‘Turning Red‘ and ‘Lightyear.’ Along with either unnecessary or far too late sequels in ‘Toy Story 4‘ and ‘Incredibles 2‘ respectively.

Elemental‘ is yet another beautifully forgettable film that focuses entirely too much on race relations and interracial dating but instead of people, it’s elements.

Unfortunately, ‘Elemental‘ is not a kid friendly film. There are far too many fart jokes regarding the basketball team the Wind Breakers, Wade Ripple(voiced by Mamoudou Athie) getting an erection after being hit with a pool noodle upon introducing Ember Luman (Leah Lewis) to his racist family was definitely not for kids. Also, Ember’s parents talking about how they have more time for, “hanky panky,” is out of the question for children.

I also would have preferred that the gay fire couple were water characters instead because the first thing that popped into my head was, “Are they really calling gay men ‘flamers’ again?”

Disney/Pixar is almost untouchable in their visual storytelling and ‘Elemental‘ is no exception. ‘Elemental‘ is an absolute wonder in that regard and if this was a silent film with a musical accompaniment, I probably would have balled my eyes out.

However, having lived a similar life to Ember, being First Generation American, I understand all the racism elements in constantly being told, “Wow, you speak English so well!”, “Funny, you don’t look…” and I have even heard a couple of times, “Welcome to America! We’re so glad you are here!” I do feel that they went far too deep in pointing out those racist behaviors, but this would have made more sense if the timeline was between the 1910s through 1990s and not 2023.

I would most likely recommend ‘Elemental‘ for ages 10 and up. The voice cast is fantastic, the visual storytelling is impeccable, several of the jokes worked, but again, a lot of the humor was not appropriate for all ages.

The best way to describe ‘Elemental‘ is that it’s animated feature blending ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner‘ and ‘The Jazz Singer,’ only Al Jolson wasn’t singing, “Mami,” nor was Neil Diamond belting out, “Coming to America.” The only benefit was that no one’s parents had to pass away in order for the First Generation child to live their dream.

I really wish I had liked it beyond the visuals, but sometimes you don’t want to be reminded for a straight 1 hour and 42 minutes that you are the “other.”

Elemental‘ comes to theaters chemically unbalanced on Friday, June 16, 2023.

Elemental‘ feels like an animated remake of The Jazz Singer,’ only no one’s immigrant parent had to die.
