Regular Show issue #1 opens with Mordecai and Rigby, a talking blue jay and raccoon respectively, working to pick up garbage at a local benefit concert. True to his television character, Rigby is working on ingesting discarded hot dogs under the guise of the 5 second rule. The music is quiet and for all intensive purposes lame, frustrating their friend Muscleman. Muscleman decides that he must create a mosh pit, thus unleashing the horror of combining two genres of music and thus opening a portal to another dimension.
KC Green’s story is true to Regular Show; that is, juvenile, simple, but entertaining. His use of the characters on the television show is spot on for their personalities and past adventures. For what it is, the story is creative; I’d never thought that a mosh pit could bring about a rift in time and space itself.
Allison Strejlau and Lisa Moore’s art work seems far too pretty to match the tone of the comic. The panels are colorful, and many have a watercolor feel that are more akin to a professional childrens’ book. I found myself greatly enjoying the artwork. Strejlau manages to capture the bizarre movements of characters, without making them too over the top.
Fans of the show will likely enjoy the familiarity of the characters and their random and implausible adventures. People who have never seen Regular Show will likely be confused at a talking bubble gum machine. It is a quick fun read and definitely worth a glance if you follow the show.
