‘Director’s Cut’ is Sick, Twisted and Eerily Delightful

GameStop, Inc.

Director’s Cut is a perfect horror/comedy soufflé. Everything easily could have fallen flat if not for the flawless execution of director, Adam Rifkin.

The story follows the premise that Rifkin set up a crowd funding for a movie called, “Knocked Off” which stars Missi Pyle, Hayes MacArthur and Harry Hamlin. What they didn’t take into account is over zealous superfan funder, Herbert Blount (Penn Jillette) thinking he had actual pull in the movie, taking over the project from Rifkin and making his own official Director’s Cut.

Written by Jillette, Director’s Cut is an ingenious horror flick using a similar narrative pattern that worked so well for Fight Club, along with the overly gruesome styling of a Rob Zombie film.

Jillette’s narration  makes the audience feel as if they are listening to the audio commentary provided by the filmmakers in the Blu-ray bonus features.

As the film transitions from Jillette’s narration to being a character in his edited version, everything gets even more over the top than I could have ever expected. At points of the flick, I was uncomfortable with some of the things that made me laugh out loud. Is there something psychologically wrong with me, or do I just get Jillette’s sense of humor?

True-to-their act, Teller never speaks when Jillette is around, but does have several lines that will allows fans to hear what he finally sounds like, if they have never done so before.

Director’s Cut had me glued to the screen and when I did look away it was only while shaking my head laughing at the dark, twisted humor that delivered in every single scene. Jillette is so amazing at slight of hand, that even narrative distractions took me away from what I should have been focusing on in the foreground.

Director’s Cut is out now in limited release and available on VOD Tuesday, May 28, 2018.

I recommend seeing it on the big screen, but if you can’t get out to the theaters, here is a list of screenings below:

  • Overall Score

Director’s Cut is a delightfully, sick and twisted film that touches on everything wrong with Hollywood. Rifkin and crew stick their fingers in open wounds that make you laugh uncomfortably at the horrors of stalking and unchecked obsession.
