Producer and Director Jacob Patrick procures three screenings of his documentary, ‘Sono Lino‘ at the 25th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival.
I was thrilled to speak with Jacob Patrick, the producer and director behind ‘Sono Lino‘, his feature documentary directorial debut. At the heart of this film is Lino Tagliapietra, a renowned artist and craftsman who many consider the greatest master glassblower of all time. After an illustrious 77-year career, Tagliapietra is now facing retirement—a moment that resonates deeply not only for him but for those who have been shaped by his artistry.
‘Sono Lino‘ has achieved the rare distinction of receiving three screenings at the Newport Beach Film Festival, especially significant during its 25th anniversary. This recognition highlights the film’s impact and resonance within the festival community.
Born in 1934 on the island of Murano, Italy, Tagliapietra began working in glass factories at just 11 years old. As he prepares for retirement, he seizes one final chance to blow glass with his original team in an extraordinary four-hour hot shop session. This event becomes a celebration of their shared passion for glass, their camaraderie, and the profound influence Tagliapietra has had on their lives and careers.
Patrick’s journey with ‘Sono Lino‘t began in February 2020, right before the world was thrust into lockdown. It was during this time that he first met Lino and witnessed not only his incredible craftsmanship but also the magic he brings to every space. Driven by a desire to tell Lino’s story, Jacob embarked on a mission to capture the essence of a man who transcends his art—a man imbued with deep humility and unparalleled talent.
As the pandemic unfolded, Patrick followed Tagliapietra across the globe, documenting moments that would become the heart of the film. With a small crew and limited resources, he dedicated himself to this passion project, finding inspiration in Lino’s wisdom and joy. After nearly two years of travel and collaboration with his editing partner, Patrick realized he was not just telling the story of an individual, but of a family and a legacy that Lino Tagliapietra will leave behind.
In this interview, we’ll explore Patrick’s creative process, the transformative experience of working with Lino, and how this project has profoundly impacted his life. Join us as we delve into the artistry and humanity that make ‘Sono Lino‘ a truly special documentary.
