Writer and Director Anna Kerrigan along with star Jillian Bell talk about their new family drama, Cowboys. Cowboys follows Sally (Bell) a mother who recently split from her bipolar husband Troy (Steve Zahn). When their daughter Joe comes out identifying as trans and wants to be recognized as their son, Troy has no problem instantly accepting his child’s decision, but Sally goes through some growing pains.
Cowboys tells the story of two parents trying to do what each feels is best about how to raise their child and the difficulties in coming to terms with not only their decisions but learning to accept each other after a seperation.
Official Synopsis:
Steve Zahn stars as Troy, a troubled but well-intentioned father who has recently separated from his wife Sally (Jillian Bell). Aghast at Sally’s refusal to let their trans son Joe (Sasha Knight) live as his authentic self, Troy runs off with Joe into the Montana wilderness. Meanwhile, police detective (Ann Dowd) pursues them, but her resolve about the case is tested the more she learns about Joe’s family. COWBOYS, a modern day Western from director Anna Kerrigan, is a tale of rescue, family betrayal and a father and son on the run.
We spoke with Zahn and Knight about their experience making the film, how the movie reflects on two flawed parents trying to love their child to the best of their abilities while figuring out their new and how to move forward.
Cowboys is a beautifully shot film and tells a story that at its core is about family and difficulties all go through, whether via divorce or any other situation that may arise.
